Domination is a word that closely classifies what Wimbledon has become since its creation in 1877. Unlike other sports, the Wimbledon tennis tournament does not seem to favor parity between its players.

Every decade, Wimbledon appears to breed another star that dominates the grass court in England. In the 1880s it was William Renshaw who won six straight years from 1881 to 1886 and once more in 1889.

Renshaw’s seven Wimbledon crowns went unmatched until the 1990s when US-born Pete Sampras took seven championships ranging from 1993 to 2000. In the 70s it was Bjorn Borg and in the 80s cocky, but always entertaining John McEnroe nabbed three titles. Boris Becker also had success in the 80s with three Wimbledon Championships.

The women’s side has been no less dominating. Nobody has touched the ranks of Martina Navratilova’s success of nine Wimbledon trophies. The closest contestants are Helen Wills Moody (8) and Steffi Graph (7).

Of course you cannot mention Wimbledon without mentioning the likes of Billie Jean King. King established the first successful women's professional tennis tour and was the first female athlete to win over $100,000 prize money in a single season.

In 1967 she was selected as "Outstanding Female Athlete of the World". In 1972 she was named Sports Illustrated "Sportsperson of the Year", the first woman to be so honored; and in 1973, she was dubbed "Female Athlete of the Year".

If years past are any indication, Wimbledon tennis will have more dominating players to come. Men’s superstar Roger Federer has won four straight titles and even though he has never won a Wimbledon crown, Andy Roddick is on the horizon.

There has never been a combination of players like the Williams sisters, Venus and Serena. The sisters have traded championships every year since 2000 with the exception of 2004 and 2006. Venus won back-to-back titles in ’00-01, where as Serena dominated in ’02-03.

The 2007 Wimbledon tournament will be held June 25 to July 8. For previews, recaps and general information, check out the web guide below.
