Penelope Cruz is the Spanish Julia Roberts, with the smile of the redheaded bombshell, the full lips of Angelina Jolie and more sexual bang than Salma Hayek. Starting off as a persistent child dancer, Penelope decided to leave home to study at Spain's greatest theater school for four years and soon appeared in her first Spanish TV drama in 1990. After following up her TV debut with a number of appearances in television commercials and music videos, Penelope went on to star in a handful of critically acclaimed Spanish films that brought home a number of Spanish Oscars and even an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film.
Known to many from her homeland as the "Spanish enchantress," Penelope moved to Hollywood in the hopes of pursuing her dream as a star, though she probably didn't expect it to happen so soon. She quickly donated the earnings she received from her first U.S. project and was suddenly thrust into a number of roles requiring her natural sincerity and exotic beauty. Declared in 2000 as one of People's 50 Most Beautiful Women, Penelope has since become a model for big shot designer Ralph Lauren and appeared in a number of U.S. films hailed for her wonderful performances. A wild child in the bedroom, Penelope has been known to mix it up with her male co-stars on and off the set. Now only if she would stop by our houses to spend the night.

Penelope Cruz on the Screen
Penelope's film career has been slowly building up over the past few years with the release of the horror/thriller "Gothika" and the Ted Demme masterpiece "Blow." Penelope was first presented to American audiences in the 1997 Sundance Film Festival favorite "Abre Los Ojos," the Spanish original that inspired Cameron Crowe's "Vanilla Sky," in which Cruz also starred. Other U.S. appearances include the dramas "All the Pretty Horses" and "Captain Corelli's Mandolin." With each new film, Penelope hopes she will become less of a pretty face and more of a serious actress. She may be getting better at the whole acting gig, but we could never forget that pretty face.
Penelope can currently be seen in "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides." Also in the works is the new Woody Allen film, "Bop Decameron," the Spanish-language drama "Venuto al mondo," and Lasse Hallström's "Rain in Spain."
On the pressures of Hollywood:
"The most important lesson I've learned in this business is how to say no. I have said no to a lot of temptations, and I am glad I did."
On searching the Internet:
"One day, I looked for myself (on the Internet), and I was so scared of what I saw. I saw 'Penelope Cruz Naked,' and I thought, what is that?"
On breaking out as a serious actress:
"The most difficult thing in the world is to start a career known only for your looks, and then to try to become a serious actress. No one will take you seriously once you are known as the pretty woman."
On her luck in the industry:
"I think it is a privilege [to be working in show business.] Not everybody can do what they want to do and still eat. I'm very lucky. And it's getting better and better."
