Blu Tuesday is a weekly column where we review the newest Blu-ray and 4K releases, along with a brief rundown of the included bonus material, to determine whether they’re worth buying, renting or skipping.
Pick of the Week: “The Marvels”
At a time when audiences are experiencing superhero fatigue, it probably wasn’t the wisest decision to tie the latest MCU film to so many different properties. To fully understand and appreciate “The Marvels,” one will need to have seen “Captain Marvel,” “WandaVision” and “Ms. Marvel” at a bare minimum. That’s a lot of homework for a movie that doesn’t feel all that consequential to the MCU at large. Still, while it’s definitely not among the studio’s best movies, “The Marvels” is much better than its poor box office receipts would suggest. Director Nia DaCosta has a lot of fun with the character-swapping shenanigans, resulting in some amusing action sequences, while Iman Vellani proves yet again why she’s one of the MCU’s brightest stars. Though the bland villain and lazy writing threatens to derail “The Marvels” at times, it just about gets by thanks to the winning chemistry between its three leads.
Extras include an audio commentary by DaCosta and VFX supervisor Tara DeMarco, as well as a behind-the-scenes look at making the film, some deleted scenes and a gag reel. FINAL VERDICT: RENT
