Under Siege (1992)

Steven Seagal spent a brief period in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s flexing his box office muscle as the star of flicks like “Above the Law” and “Hard to Kill,” but it wasn’t until 1992 that he stumbled upon a character that would prove successful enough to earn a sequel: Navy SEAL-turned-chef Casey Ryback. Seagal had already been battling some formidable scene-chewers by this point in his career – Henry Silva, Bill Sadler, William Forsythe – but they were nothing compared to the one-two punch of Gary Busey and Tommy Lee Jones in “Under Siege.” Alas, Commander Krill (Busey) bails out before the film’s climax, but that’s okay, because Stranix (Jones) actually has the better wardrobe, anyway. (No, seriously, Tommy Lee, nice jacket.) When Ryback and Stranix face off in the control room of the USS Missouri, the scene starts with the latter holding the former at gunpoint, but after one quick disarming kick by Casey, the weapon of choice quickly changes and the steel blades start blazing in an appropriately fast and furious manner. It’s a laughably one-sided battle, of course, with Stranix really only getting in one decent slice, but that’s quite enough for Ryback; he immediately pins Stranix down with one hand while taking away Stranix’s knife with his teeth (!), then, with the other hand, stabs him right through the top of his fucking skull. Game, set, and match…though, of course, Seagal being Seagal, he still has to go for the overkill and shove his opponent headfirst into a nearby control panel. Damn, we love that guy.
