It's football season, the baseball playoffs are set to begin, the NHL and NBA, in addition to college basketball, are right around the corner...I feel as good as Kramer did on Seinfeld when he decided to walk around "free and easy"…. All I am hearing from members of the media is how sad they are to see a jerk like Barry Bonds break Mark McGwire's home run mark. I, for one, disagree. Bonds will go down as one of the best players in the history of the game -- he can do it all. McGwire, on the other hand, is nothing more than my generations' version of Dave Kingman. The records should be held by the best players -- regardless of how they treat the media. As I sat on the couch last Sunday, Miller Lite in one hand, the remote in the other, the Direct TV NFL package on the screen, food on the grill, obnoxious friends (not unlike myself) to my left and right, it finally dawned on me -- the NFL is America's sport. Forget baseball -- it's too long, there aren't any bone-crushing hits, and it's every day of the week. The NFL on Sunday brings Americans together like no other sport. Speaking of the NFL, my prediction of a Rams-Broncos Super Bowl looks better every week. Yeah, yeah, I know the Ravens beat the Broncos last week, but there is no way they will be advance very far with a running game led by old man Allen (Terry, that is)... American League playoff predictions -- First round - Seattle over Cleveland, Oakland over the Yanks...Second round - Oakland over the Mariners and into the World Series to face…who knows?…maybe the Diamondbacks. How can you not at least make it to the World Series with Schilling and the Big Unit on your pitching staff? Brenly should go back to broadcasting if Arizona doesn't make it…. Can somebody tell me why Pat Summerall is still the lead play-by-play guy with John Madden on Fox? When they showed him before the Rams-Dolphins game last Sunday, he looked as though he just finished his tenth Bloody Mary...he gets players' names wrong constantly...he doesn't add any insight whatsoever...hey Rupert, buy the guy a one way ticket to the Betty Ford Clinic, for the sake of Pat's health and NFL fans everywhere…. What has happened to Penn State and Notre Dame? In the past, even when the Nittany Lions didn't have an overabundance of talent, they were at least competitive enough to win 6 or 7 games...now they are getting spanked by Iowa...And how about Notre Dame? They have a huge amount of talent and Bob Davie simply can't handle it. What's his deal with putting in a different RB for every series? They are called first team and second team for a reason, Bobby boy...0-3, that's brutal. Get your resume ready, coach Davie, because you are gone after this season…. Bill Belichick, Marty Schottenheimer, Tony Dungy, Gregg Williams -- what do they all have in common? They find a way to take a great fantasy player and make him worthless quicker than it takes Howard Stern to ask a female guest to take her bra and panties off…I will never draft, pick up, or trade for any player wasting his fantasy value with those clowns again...now to coaches we fantasy players love -- Mike Martz, Dennis Green, Andy Reid, Steve Mariucci...I am telling you, these guys play fantasy football and pick their own players…. I am glad Michael Jordan is back…I just hope he doesn't pull a Magic Johnson and retire again right in the middle of the season…Carter, Kobe, and The Answer are going to run circles around him -- I can't wait to see his reaction when it happens…. Is it just me or are the new TV sitcoms simply the worst you have ever seen? It's like the producers of these shows are catering to the lowest common denominator… Well, I hope all of you who wanted the striking officials are happy that they are back. I'm not. It's like they are throwing more flags than ever just to show us how much they're needed...let them play, you morons…the best Saturday Night Live skit ever was the one where Big Chubbs John Goodman played an official who had to explain all of his terrible calls after the game...and Kevin Nealon asked him questions like, "On this play, you clearly had your head up your ass…." Now why can't we get Jack Arute to question these bums on the sideline after the game? Why can't other media members question the officials after the game? They'll ask a player why he fumbled...why aren't they permitted to ask a referee why he blew a call? I don't care what the P.C. police say -- there is not a better logo in sports than Chief Wahoo of the Indians…. Did you hear? The "Tangerine Bowl" is back. That is great news to my ears. Ever since the Tangerine Bowl changed its name in 1982, the Bowl season hasn't been the same for me.... Who would you least want to face if you owed money to the mob -- Luco Brasi, Tommy DeVito (Pesci from Goodfellas) or Paulie Walnuts? I would rather face Luco Brasi -- I think I could outrun him and his shot wouldn't be as accurate if he's trying to run after me…DeVito is one mean little S.O.B., in my book…and Paulie always brings backup.... The Astros are chicken feces, in my opinion. First, this season they hit Ellis Burks of the Indians, breaking his finger. The Tribe retaliates, Houston whines about it, so Bartolo Colon is suspended...now they aren't pitching to Barry Bonds...my favorite National League team in the playoffs? WIPtA! Whoever Is Playing the Astros…. The Montreal Expos are a total embarrassment to Major League Baseball. If Bud Selig wasn't such a Major League Wimp, he would have forced them to move years ago…. When I see these geeky, little wormy anti-war protestors on TV, I could see how, if I was there, Mr. Hand would turn into Mr. Fist pretty quick….
