Online technology continues to develop and with that comes the introduction of new software and programmes. However, as time passes by some of the coding and programmes we have been using regularly online have disappeared. One of the latest to leave us is Adobe Flash. This was used to power web applications, casino games, animations, audio, and video content.

Despite having many casinos to choose from, the common link between the games featured like Blackjack, Craps, and Online Poker across the various casino websites was Flash. In fact, there was a time when you could barely get by online without having the Flash extension installed on your web browser. Fast forward to 2021 and Flash has been abandoned by Adobe and bug fixes are no longer on the menu.
So, what does that mean for online gaming? Many of the online games we enjoy playing, including casino games, were powered using Flash.

There are a couple of options available for those who would like to continue playing old Flash games. You can head to the Internet Archives website where you will find a good selection of Flash games, applications, and animations. You will need to play these games through emulation but it is easy to follow for those who are determined to continue playing Flash games. The other option is to use BlueMaxima’s Flashpoint software and this works by using dedicated software to power Flash games, of which there are over 70,00 available in the database.

However, now Flash is dead, what software is powering new online games?

In some instances, HTML5 has slowly been replacing Flash. HTML5 can do many of the same things Flash did such and as a casual observer, you may not even realise Flash has disappeared. If you take some of the major online platforms such as Facebook and YouTube, they had already fully migrated over to HTML5 in 2020 and most users had no idea it happened.

Take iOS devices as an example and these have never been able to use Flash yet have always managed to power online casino games. The casino games worked on Apple devices mainly because of HTML5 and this is certainly the way forward in terms of online gaming. There were several security concerns when using Flash and although HTML5 is certainly not flawless in terms of security, it is definitely more stable.

For those who have regularly been playing online casino games, you are unlikely to notice any difference due to the end of Flash. Anything that needs to be changed so you can continue to enjoy playing online games, such as those provided by casinos, will happen in the background and in most cases, you will not notice anything has happened. A small number of games may briefly disappear if they need to be updated for HTML5 or may be withdrawn altogether if the company feels it is not worth bringing the game back.

Interestingly, we may see a greater introduction of mobile casino applications due to the demise of Flash.
