Monty can't take it anymore

Did you hear what golfer Colin Montgomerie said recently?

Apparently, the hefty Scotsman is fed up with the constant heckling he receives in the United States and, after this season, he says he is not going to play here any more.

The seven-time European No. 1 player lost in the first round of this past week's World Match Play Championship in California. During the match, a fan cheered when the Scotsman missed a putt on the 12th hole. Later, as he was leaving the course after being eliminated by Scott McCarron, Montgomerie told a fan who asked how he played in the match, "There's only one thing worse than losing, and that's spending another day in your country."

After this defeat, "Monty" sounded off on us mean American fans in a diatribe more appropriate for a snotty 12-year-old girl who lost a local figure skating event rather than arguably one of the best golfers in the world to not yet win a Major. (That is what really bugs him...trust me.)

McCarron said Thursday evening the heckling was blown out of proportion.

"There was only one guy who stifled a yell when Colin missed a putt on the 12th, and that was it," McCarron said.

McCarron said one of his friends complimented him for a good shot on the 15th hole. Montgomerie, in a bunker, heard the compliment and told the man he was an idiot.

"He brings a lot of it on himself," McCarron said.

Monty (I prefer Mrs. Doubtfire) granted an interview with the Daily Mail and L.A. Times newspapers and said a lot of interesting things.

What I would like to do for you is give you the quotes and then translate them for their true meaning (in my opinion, of course). Here's what Mrs. Doubtfire told the newspapers:

*"I'm on my last legs over here. I'm 39 and don't need this any more."

What he meant by that: "I can't believe I haven't won a Major yet. I am 39 going on 64, gaining 10 pounds a day, and look like a fat old woman. If I haven't won a Major yet, I doubt I ever will. I need a good excuse to save face. The European press, the gutless wonders that they are, will respect and understand this one."

*"What can I possibly hope to achieve over here if spectators don't allow me to compete on the same terms as everyone else?"

What he meant by that: "Tiger Woods is incredible. Even the best golfers can barely compete with this guy. How I am supposed to? I mean, look at me! I will never win a damn thing because I am bitter fat man who can't take any type of pressure."

*"At this point, I'm on the edge. There is no level playing field. I simply don't have the desire to deal with it any longer."

What he meant by that: "I have the thinnest skin possible. It's a wonder how this skin keeps my huge girth together. If I had half the spine of most golfers, who handle all kinds of pressure, maybe I would have won a Major by now. I am weak. I give up."

*"If this is happening to me in the first round of a tournament in such a low-key setting, what would happen to me on the 17th hole of a Major? Would I even be allowed to take back the club? Would someone run across the green and snatch my ball away from me?"

What he meant by that: "Look at me. What a mess. I can't even take a stupid fan heckling me in a minor golf match like this. Imagine how bad I would freak out if this was a Major!"

Look, I have no idea who is advising Doubtfire. But they are not doing a very good job of it. Why hasn't this guy learned in his 39 years on this earth not to let the behavior of a few fans bother him? Doesn't he realize that the more he talks about it, the worse it's going to get? Of course he does. By not playing in the United States, where three out of the four Majors are held, what Monty is doing is throwing in the towel (and what a big towel it is)…and using the behavior of a few rowdy fans as an excuse to quit rather than sucking it up and going for a Major victory.

Monty -- tons of talent, nerves of spaghetti. Have fun back in Europe, big guy. We won't miss you here.
