Fans of this veteran Canadian band will not be disappointed with their latest release. These alt-rockers continue to churn out good alternative pop music that is easy to listen to and melodic, yet very unique. This one is a concept record, basically a futuristic journey into the day when machines will take the place of human life. The tracks alternate between dialogue and songs in a way that tells the story yet lets the music shine.

"Right Behind You" is a catchy opening track, but the best song is "In Repair," the current single. Frankly, it's one of the best songs I've ever heard as a package of music, lyrics and production. After the first single "Life," the album delves into a darker side. "Are You Sad?" is just what the title suggests, a very depressing piece, but one you can't push the skip button on. "Made to Heal" and "Everyone's a Junkie" show off this band's incredible musicianship but are not real catchy. But the pace is picked up again with "All My Friends" and "If You Believe," two mid-tempo tracks that grab the listener in a sad, soothing way.

One listen to Spiritual Machines will not have you singing along right away. But listen to it a few times to grasp the concept and you'll be hitting "repeat" several times like I was. It's quite an addictive record.
