The term “Manic Pixie Dream Girl” was coined by film critic Nathan Rabin after seeing the film “Elizabethtown” as explained by Urban Dictionary. Rabin wrote that it refers to “that bubbly, shallow cinematic creature that exists solely in the fevered imaginations of sensitive writer-directors to teach broodingly soulful young men to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures.” Urban Dictionary goes on to describe the type as “a pretty, outgoing, whacky female romantic lead whose sole purpose is to help broody male characters lighten up and enjoy their lives.” Natalie Portman‘s character as Sam in “Garden State” is considered by many as the ultimate expression of this type of character. Since then, Natalie seems to have soured on this notion and says she regrets her Manic Pixie Dream Girl roles. That’s a shame.
What’s wrong with a character like Sam played by Portman? She’s sweet, quirky, beautiful and young. Yes, many guys love that type. And she’s an adult and there’s nothing wrong with that. Just like woman who fanatasize about men built like male models or athletes who also happened to be sweet, sensitive, have a PhD and only have eyes for her. Yes, we all construct idealized characters.
We thought we would have some fun with this and pick out some of our favorite models who we would invite to a casting session to try out to play this type of character. We definitely focused on models who had a look that fit the type but could also flash an amazing smile that rivals that of Natalie Portman. Many of these models also had unique charisma and personalities that made them a joy to work with. Check out our choices linked below.
