Have You Patched Your PHP Website? AI Is Changing Cybersecurity Forever

    cybersecurity

A massive security vulnerability affecting one of the internet’s most widely used programming languages offers a frightening glimpse into the cybersecurity threats emerging from increasingly powerful artificial intelligence.

If you own a website, there’s an important question you should be asking your developer or hosting company: Have we patched our PHP software?

On October 21, 2026, the PHP development team released emergency security updates addressing two critical vulnerabilities in the programming language that powers approximately 70% of the world’s websites. The vulnerabilities could potentially allow hackers to execute malicious code remotely on vulnerable servers without needing a password or other authentication. That means attackers could potentially gain access to sensitive information, install malware, compromise websites, or disrupt business operations.

The FBI issued an urgent warning on October 23, advising website owners and businesses to check their systems and install the available security patches immediately.

Importantly, the fact that PHP powers approximately 70% of websites does not mean every one of those sites is vulnerable. But the widespread use of PHP makes this a particularly serious threat.

And there’s another element to this story that deserves even more attention: Artificial intelligence played a significant role in discovering these vulnerabilities.

AI Agents Are Changing the Cybersecurity Equation

According to OpenAI, one of the critical PHP vulnerabilities was discovered with the assistance of its advanced AI models. Researchers at cybersecurity company Wiz also independently discovered and reported the vulnerabilities.

In this instance, AI helped security researchers identify serious problems and coordinate solutions before public disclosure.

    That’s the good news.

The bad news is that the same technological advances are making powerful hacking capabilities increasingly accessible to criminals and other malicious actors.

Frontier AI models have become remarkably capable at writing computer code, identifying software vulnerabilities, and solving complex technical problems. Unlike human hackers, AI agents can operate around the clock, and large numbers of agents can potentially work together on the same objective.

Imagine thousands of sophisticated hackers working continuously to find weaknesses in websites, servers, and business networks. Now imagine that much of this work can be automated. This is the cybersecurity nightmare that AI critics have been warning about for years.

    Welcome to Black October

The recent PHP emergency is part of a broader cybersecurity scare that some observers are calling “Black October.”

The concern isn’t simply that hackers have discovered another dangerous software vulnerability. Security vulnerabilities have existed for decades. What’s changing is the speed and scale at which increasingly capable AI systems can potentially discover and exploit them. Cybersecurity experts have long relied on the ability to identify threats, develop patches, and deploy defenses before attackers can cause widespread damage.

But what happens when AI agents can discover vulnerabilities faster than organizations can fix them? And what happens when sophisticated offensive capabilities become available to people who previously lacked the technical expertise to conduct major cyberattacks? These questions are becoming increasingly urgent.

Can We Trust the AI Companies to Police Themselves?

AI critics, have repeatedly warned that increasingly autonomous AI agents pose serious risks. Even some of the technology industry’s most prominent figures have acknowledged the dangers.

Bill Gates has warned about the potential for major negative surprises involving AI and cybersecurity. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has also discussed how advanced AI models are becoming capable of discovering software vulnerabilities that could overwhelm traditional approaches to security.

Yet the leading AI companies remain locked in an extraordinarily expensive race to develop increasingly powerful systems. Trillions of dollars in potential economic value are at stake, creating enormous incentives to release new capabilities as quickly as possible.

This raises a fundamental public policy question: Should private technology companies be allowed to deploy increasingly powerful autonomous AI agents across the internet without meaningful government oversight?

The argument for stronger regulation becomes particularly compelling when the potential consequences extend far beyond the companies developing these technologies. The cybersecurity risks could affect banks, hospitals, government agencies, small businesses, and virtually anyone who relies on the internet.

What Website Owners Should Do Right Now

The immediate priority is straightforward: Make sure your website isn’t running a vulnerable version of PHP. If you operate a WordPress website, or any other website built with PHP, contact your hosting provider or developer and confirm that the appropriate security updates have been installed.

Organizations should consult the official security advisory to determine which updates apply to their systems. Don’t assume that updating WordPress itself automatically resolves the problem. PHP operates at the server level, and its security updates must be addressed separately.

Website owners should also review their security monitoring and investigate any evidence of unauthorized activity. Installing a patch prevents further exploitation of the repaired vulnerability, but it doesn’t necessarily undo a compromise that occurred before the update.

The Bigger Problem Is Just Beginning

The PHP security emergency demonstrates both the promise and the danger of advanced artificial intelligence. AI can help security researchers discover vulnerabilities that might otherwise go unnoticed for years. But the same capabilities could transform the economics of cybercrime, allowing attackers to operate at unprecedented speed and scale.

The internet was not designed for a world in which thousands of intelligent software agents can continuously search for weaknesses. And governments have barely begun to address the implications. Do your research and don’t hesitate to address this problem. And if you have a computer science degree, you might want to focus on cybersecurity.
