Blu Tuesday is a weekly column where we review the newest home video releases, along with a rundown of the included extras, to determine whether they’re worth buying, renting or skipping.
Pick of the Week: “The End of Oak Street”
With the exception of the Jurassic Park/Jurassic World franchise, there aren’t very many dinosaur movies made for older audiences, so David Robert Mitchell’s Amblin-esque sci-fi adventure “The End of Oak Street” is a welcome treat. Much like Mitchell’s indie horror film “It Follows,” which played like an homage to classic 1970s horror cinema, “The End of Oak Street” feels like a throwback to classic 1980s Amblin films that blends Spielbergian suburban family drama with creature-feature thrills. It’s surprisingly more visceral and violent than one might expect, but that only adds to the excitement and emotional stakes, especially in the latter half as the characters are thrust into survival mode. Though the movie’s darker, meaner tone is slightly undone by its contentious ending, “The End of Oak Street” is a fun prehistoric thriller that makes the most of its unique premise.
Extras include a behind-the-scenes look at making the film. FINAL VERDICT: RENT
Also Out This Week:
“Mutiny” — Audiences pretty much know what they’re getting from a Jason Statham movie these days, and while some are better than others, they all tend to fall somewhere between mediocre and downright forgettable. “Mutiny” belongs in the latter camp — it’s a dull and formulaic action-thriller with very little in the way of actual action or thrills. The whole thing is such a slog that even Statham seems like he’s just going through the motions. Though the action ramps up a bit in the final act, it’s so poorly executed that it feels more like something from the direct-to-video market than the type of high-energy action film that Statham built his career on. He’s better than this low-rent genre fare, and he knows it. FINAL VERDICT: SKIP
Disclosure: Bullz-Eye was provided a copy of the above titles for review purposes.
