Mary Louise Weller in “Animal House”
Most of us discovered the lovely Mary Louise Weller from her memorable role as the uptight sorority sister Mandy Pepperidge in the 1978 comedy classic “National Lampoon’s Animal House.” Along with Martha Smith she played one of the two classic blonde sorority girls in the film, both adding the perfect touch of eye candy to this wild film.
Mary Louise began her professional life as a successful fashion model in New York City, where she became one of the top models of her era. She was frequently described as a “top New York model” before transitioning to acting. She was tall at 5′ 8″ and has a perfect figure, and her striking blonde looks and presence helped establish her in the modeling world during the late 1960s/early 1970s. We included some television commercials below from the late 70s and 1980 where she looked stunning.
She had a number of television and movie roles over the years, but she’ll always be known for her role as Mandy. Mandy is the prim, proper, and somewhat snobbish girlfriend of Greg Marmalard, the arrogant leader of the rival Omega Theta Pi fraternity. Mandy embodies the “stuck-up” rich sorority girl archetype, but she also reveals at times that deep down she has a soft spot for the wild Deltas, and of course she ends up with Bluto (John Belushi) in a hilarious twist at the end!
Fans will never forget the iconic scene where Bluto climbs a ladder to peak in the window as Mandy undresses. Inside her room, Mandy begins to undress after returning from a date with Greg. She slowly removes her outer dress, revealing classic 1950s/early 1960s-style lingerie: a lacy bra, panties, thigh-high stockings, and a garter belt. Wow! In a signature Belushi moment, as Mandy undresses, Bluto turns directly to the camera, raises his eyebrows with a mischievous, conspiratorial grin, breaking the fourth wall as he enjoys the view. Scenes like this made “Animal House” a sensation and help kick off the raunchy comedy era in Hollywood.
Interviews and Quotes
Interview with Bill Tush in Hollywood
This is a wild interview that looks like it took place sometime in the 80s when you look at that big hair. She still looks amazing here but frankly looks very different from how she looked in “Animal House.” She gives some very frank answers about her career as a model and actress, but also has a great time with the gang here with plenty of laughs.
Interview with cult film freak
This is a short but wild interview where she described how she got the part of Mandy: “They had hired another actress before my meeting with the boys in the black tower at Universal. Suffice it to say something rather graphic happened in my audition that convinced them to hire me and pay off the first actress… who has gone onto huge huge movies…” Wow! We would have loved to be in that audition room, and we’d love to know which actress she’s referring to her!
