Are you thinking of finally popping the question? You might be saving up, or letting the idea of a white dress fill your mind while your loved one goes about their morning routine. Maybe your mind is wandering to your future. So, what’s the next step? Getting a diamond ring obviously.
But is there an option beyond diamonds? They are traditional, but that rarely means it’s the best option. Take a look at our points as to why you should consider a moissanite diamond instead.
They’re beautiful
Before we get into why you should buy a moissanite diamond ring, we should lay out why you should buy a diamond ring. There is obviously the symbolic romance of a diamond ring that traditionally makes it perfect for an engagement ring. They’re durable and beautiful, and if that isn’t a metaphor for a lasting relationship, we don’t know what is. Perhaps due to this mythology around the gem, there is a lasting identity to diamonds. They are timeless through history and will not only go with, but arguably elevate, any outfit. So, there are a lot of different reasons why a diamond ring might be perfect for your loved ones, but is a moissanite the way to go?
They’re virtually identical
The biggest problem that people have with moissanites is the idea that they’re not “real” diamonds. This is debatable. The difference can be boiled down to the fact that they are manmade rather than organically made by the earth. Moissanites can be made organically by the planet, but the process can also be replicated in a lab. As such it might lose the status symbol and rarity that comes with a diamond created organically, but it means that it also loses a lot of financial value.
But all those things are part of the mythology of the diamond. If you don’t go around telling people that your diamond is a real diamond, no one is to know. And that is because moissanites and diamonds are almost impossible to tell apart with the naked eye. In fact, moissanites are considered brighter than diamonds with a better brilliance.
They’re more affordable
Due to this very, very minimal difference between the two gems, it’s easy to see why moissanite engagement rings are appealing. If you are going with the tradition of spending three months’ salary on an engagement ring, you can put that money even further by opting for a more valuable moissanite ring. Even better, you can put that money to use for a bigger wedding or towards your honeymoon.
But will it last?
Well, that’s the other difference between a moissanite and a diamond: the hardness. Yes, moissanites aren’t as hard as diamonds – by half a point. Diamonds get a 10/10 for hardness, moissanites get a 9.5. For reference, rubies and sapphires have a score of 9 and emeralds a score of 7. Diamonds remain the hardest gem, but moissanites are right behind them. This means that whether you opt for organic or man-made, you’re not buying “cheap”. You’re still buying something that will last forever.
