All I can say is wow. This movie took me by complete surprise. After all the recent sci-fi flops (i.e. “Lost in Space”) I didn’t expect anything good could come from Hollywood, especially a movie that taps into the computer culture. But “The Matrix” delivers in spades.
Keanu Reeves usually sleep-walks through his roles (like his sonorous performance in “Speed”), but this seemed to be a subject he warmed to. It also brought the best out of an underrated Larry Fishburn.
The special effects and gritty look and feel of this movie have been copied in a variety of settings and media. I look for this to be the next “Aliens” in terms of a cult following.
The DVD print of this movie is flawless. Tons of special features and behind the scenes info is available, making it a must-buy. Get two so you have one when the first disc gets stolen.
