More of the same from an apparently brain dead Hollywood who can’t seem to come up with an original idea for a comedy capable of drawing laughter. “Scary Movie” is another attempt to goof on all the teen horror movies of the past few years. All it basically amounts to is a very long “In Living Color” comedy skit, though like most of the skits on that show, the comedy is lame, juvenile humor only an immature twelve year old could appreciate.
Silly and crude is the order of the day in this spoof. There is nothing subtle about any of the jokes. This is not the humor of comic geniuses, it’s the foolish humor of a class clown-type striving desperately for some attention. Not being actually funny, this clown is forced to resort to silly, gross-out humor to provoke a few titters. “Scary Movie” is the cinematic equivalent to watching a 5th grade classmate blow milk out of his nose.
The killer gets stoned. The killer stabs a woman in the chest and comes away with her breast implant. A frightened victim dribbles snot (rather than milk) out of her nose ala Blair Witch. A bushy girlfriend has her pubic hair trimmed by her hedge-trimmer wielding boyfriend then is blasted to the ceiling with his ensuing orgasm. Don’t get the wrong idea here. There is no nudity, only stupidity.
“Scary Movie” is not completely devoid of laughs. Out of the whole silly onslaught, most people will find, guiltily perhaps, a few things to chuckle at. But this movie is solely for the many partying high school sophomores who’ve managed to gain entrance to this R-rated disaster. If you’re not among that group, or the mental equivalent thereof, avoid this insult to any intelligence.
