Chocolates are usually a great go-to gift for Valentine’s Day, but prices have spiked quite a bit over the past several years. We’ve had idiotic tariffs to go along with lingering effects from a severe global cocoa shortage that peaked in 2024–2025.

If you want to get the best value for your buck, you might consider some other options as you buy your last-minute gift for the big day. You might even end up spending more, but you’ll likely get more value for your purchase.

One obvious choice is flowers, as we can see in the photo above. Women usually love and appreciate flowers, and you can’t go wrong if you’re truly looking for something romantic.

Other options to consider:

Experiences — Many women prefer memories over things, like a spa day, cooking class, dance class, wine tasting, concert tickets, or a weekend getaway). The idea here is to find something you can enjoy as well, so that the two of you can enjoy the enxperience togther.

Non-chocolate treats — Opt for gourmet gummies, artisanal cookies, popcorn tins, fruit baskets, or candy alternatives that might be a better value at the moment.

Personalized or sentimental items — Jewelry, custom photo books, books, or subscription boxes (e.g., coffee, tea, or books) are great options as well. This is where you have to put some thought into it. What does she really like that she might not splurge on herself?

What message do you want to send?

This is probably the most critical question. It’s important to be thoughtful, but beyond that what does she want from the relationship, and do you feel the same way? If things are super romantic or serious, you better step up and give a gift that meets her emotional expectations. If you want to keep things more casual and not ratchet up the emotional intensity, then you can’t go overboard with this gift.

Either way, enjoy the day! In the end, dinner and a fancy hotel for some intense play time might be your best bet!
