You have to admire BMW’s willingness to push the styling envelope, but with an iconic brand, there’s a fine line between refreshing and overreaching.

Take a look at that front fascia. Slick? Absolutely. Elegant? In its own way, yes. It carries the signature design language that every automaker seems to be chasing right now: that clean, sculpted “electric” aesthetic built for a new era of motoring. But somewhere in the pursuit of the contemporary, a little of that unmistakable BMW soul gets left behind — and for a long-time admirer of the brand’s classics, that’s hard to ignore.

The 2027 BMW 7 Series received its world premiere today as BMW unveiled it simultaneously at Auto China 2026 in Beijing and at a special event at Grand Central Terminal in New York City.

This is a significant mid-cycle refresh (not a full new generation) of the current flagship luxury sedan and its electric i7 sibling. It incorporates some technologies and design influences from BMW’s upcoming Neue Klasse platform/models, while retaining the overall architecture and bold proportions of the 2022–2026 G70 model.

For many, the new front grille is an improvement over the controversial 2022 version. The 2027 grille is still huge and unapologetically BMW, but the shift to horizontal slats, refined proportions, and improved lighting integration make it look more sophisticated and less polarizing than the 2022 original. Many reviewers describe it as “fixing” the grille problem while doubling down on the car’s commanding road presence.

I can’t argue with that . . . but I’m still not a huge fan.
