Ugh, there’s nothing worse than landing somewhere new and trying to get a ride yet realizing your mobile internet or your cellphone service is basically dead. I’ve been there more times than I’d like to admit, and trust me, it’s extremely stressful. No WhatsApp messages, very slow maps, and the endless doom of that loading screen. Definitely the worst. But over the years that I’ve been traveling, I’ve picked up some tricks that I found really helpful to keep my mobile internet working while traveling. I kinda wish someone had told me sooner, but I’ll be that person for you.
You don’t have to experience the please-not-again moments while traveling because these tips will surely make your cell phone service so much better. Let’s go!
1. Grab a local SIM card.
Yes, really. I used to skip this because I thought, meh, my phone will figure it out. Nope. Big mistake. A local SIM card usually gives way better coverage and way cheaper data than international roaming. Just keep in mind though that make sure your phone is factory unlocked or you’ll be that person frantically googling how to unlock it at 2 AM. You wouldn’t want to experience that.
2. Download offline maps before you leave the house.
I really commend Google Maps for adding this feature because it’s such a lifesaver for travelers, especially if I’m too introverted to talk to other people. I’ve gotten lost in cities more than once just because I trusted that sweet little signal. It’s not like you’re taking your internet service provider with you everywhere you go, so make sure you download offline maps before going anywhere.
3. Use public WiFi wisely.
Airport WiFi is great until it isn’t. I know you’ve experienced that if you’re a frequent traveler. The good thing is most establishments, like hotels, cafes, and some public areas have WiFi. It’s just that you need to make sure it’s secure before connecting to it and avoid using online banking or anything that involves sensitive information when you’re on public WiFi. As tempting as it is to quickly check your bank app or log into everything, this is one of those better safe than sorry moments.
4. Turn on data saver mode.
Some apps eat data like there’s no tomorrow. Running out of data while traveling is something I’ve experienced a lot, and it happened too many times because of one stupid reason. I forgot to turn on data saver mode. Every single time. It’s usually the background apps that I forget to close so they’re automatically refreshing and syncing even when I’m not using them. By the time I notice, my data is already halfway gone.
That’s why make sure that whenever you’re traveling and you’re mainly relying on your mobile data for connection, turn on data saver mode because it makes a big difference. It can save you a lot of stress… and money for that matter.
5. Keep a backup SIM just in case.
Even though you’re well-prepared, there are days when things don’t go as planned. It happens and you have to deal with it. The best thing you can do is keep a backup SIM or a small portable WiFi/hotspot. This way, you don’t have to go crazy looking for a store to buy a SIM or connect to their WiFi just so you can do whatever you need to do.
Don’t Let Your Mobile Internet Issues Ruin Your Trip
Travel already comes with enough surprises, and losing your internet connection doesn’t need to be one of them, especially now that we’re sooo dependent on the internet. A little preparation goes a long way, so make sure you take the time to actually consider these tips. Have a safe trip!
