Pick of the Week: “Sonic the Hedgehog 3”
The “Sonic” movies have been one of the bigger surprises to come out of Hollywood in recent years, especially for a series based on a video game, which historically have not been too successful. Though the 2022 sequel was a bit of a letdown due to an overbloated runtime and a lame subplot involving its human characters, “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” is a much-improved installment that gives fans what they want: namely, more of Sonic and his friends. James Marsden is barely in this film despite being the co-lead of the first movie, which tells you all you need to know about the direction of the franchise, and it’s honestly for the better. Still, the highlight is once again Jim Carrey, this time playing dual roles as Robotnik and his long-lost grandfather. It’s hard to imagine where the “Sonic” series would be without Carrey as the evil mad scientist because while the titular blue speedster may be the star, it’s Carrey who injects it with the necessary humor and energy to make it all work.
Extras include an audio commentary by director Jeff Fowler, a behind-the-scenes look at making the film, some deleted scenes and a gag reel. FINAL VERDICT: RENT
