Sports Betting 101: How line shopping can save you money

There’s a big difference between casual betting for fun, and being serious about winning money and not losing money. You have to ask yourself a simple question: what kind of bettor are you?

Many of us do this for fun, so we’re happy to enjoy a weekend in Las Vegas hoping to win some money to blow on our favorite vices, or place the random bet through football season on our app of choice.

But if you’re betting serious money, you have to take this more serious.

First, should you even be betting that much? Look, most people are suckers and are going to lose over time. You’re probably one of them, so start here, and maybe be more sensible about how much you’re betting.

Next, if you get through that initial analysis (most people don’t), then you’ll start to realize that every edge matters when you consistently have real money at stake.

In that case, the simple notion of “line shopping” should be second nature for you. Every half point matters. We’ve all been there, and taking the extra time to fine a half point edge in your favor can be the difference over time between being a winning better and a loser.

Yes, it takes more time. You have to watch lines on sites like Vegas Insider and compare them across apps and other online casinos. And then you have to have accounts across those various apps and sites. It’s a pain in the ass.

But what do you want more? The convenience of betting on one app, or that slight edge that can save you serious money.

So go back and ask yourself what kind of better you are. Are you serious about it, or just having fun. Keep that in mind when that half point costs you real money. Either do this right, or lower the amounts you’re betting.
