Blu Tuesday: “The First Omen”

Blu Tuesday is a weekly column where we review the newest Blu-ray and 4K releases, along with a brief rundown of the included bonus material, to determine whether they’re worth buying, renting or skipping.

Pick of the Week: “The First Omen”

Religious horror has never been my cup of tea, in part because the movies in that subgenre are all pretty much the same, tapping into the inherent creepiness of the cult of religion (especially Catholicism and the iconography that goes with it) to tell tales of demonic possession, satanic rituals and more. As a prequel to the 1976 cult classic “The Omen,” Arkasha Stevenson’s “The First Omen” is plagued by this same feeling of monotony, though it’s executed at a higher level than the typical fare thanks to some interesting visuals and a solid performance from star Nell Tiger Free. While that certainly makes “The First Omen” better than most studio horror films, it’s still a largely forgettable affair due to the been-there-done-that nature of its story, which fails to bring anything new to the table in any meaningful way.

Extras include a trio of behind-the-scenes featurettes. FINAL VERDICT: RENT
