You may have purchased at least one refurbished item in your life, but if not, you’re probably familiar with the concept. A refurbished item is something that has been tested to see if it needs maintenance, repairs, or new parts. The simplest example is a refurbished computer. Someone might give their old laptop to a computer store, and the staff will inspect it, replace broken parts, fix issues with the software, and restore it to a state that is like new in terms of how it performs.
Power transformers can also be refurbished. Although the process is more complex than refurbishing a computer, the result is the same – a used transformer that will function beyond its initial projected lifespan.
Refurbished transformers are an option, but is it the right choice for your application? Is it worth the investment? The answer depends on several factors.
Do you want a warranty?
Compared to buying a used transformer from a private party, which is not recommended, when you buy a refurbished transformer from a reputable manufacturer, you’ll get a warranty just like you would with a new purchase. The only difference will be the length of that warranty. For example, if a manufacturer usually offers a two-year warranty on new transformers, they’ll probably give you a one-year warranty on a pre-owned, refurbished transformer.
Is your application temporary?
When you need a transformer for a temporary situation, like at a construction site, a refurbished unit makes perfect sense. There’s no need to invest a lot of money in something you’ll only be using for a short period of time. A refurbished transformer will work just as well for the time being, and you can still sell it when the project is complete if you don’t have any other applications for its use.
Do you need an immediate replacement?
If you’re in a position where you need a replacement transformer because yours recently failed or was damaged beyond repair, a refurbished unit is a good option. You’ll be able to get a pre-owned transformer much faster than a new one, which means you’ll have fewer days of downtime. Since there’s still a transformer shortage, that can mean the difference between staying in business and having to shut down your operations long-term.
How soon do you need a transformer?
If you aren’t aware, there has been a transformer shortage since around 2020, when the pandemic hit and materials were in short supply. The shortage is getting a little better, but it’s not over by any means. The wait time for a new transformer can be up to two years.
Maybe you can delay the start of your project, and the shortage won’t impact you negatively. If that’s the case, consider yourself lucky. Most people who need a transformer are on a strict timeline and face serious consequences for having to cancel permits and official appointments.
If two years is too long to wait and you need a transformer immediately, a refurbished unit would be a great option. They’re much cheaper than new units, and although it won’t have the typical lifespan you’d get with a new transformer, it will last until you get your new transformer. Just make sure you get on a waitlist because there’s no guarantee that transformers will be available again for immediate purchase.
Refurbished transformers are a short-term solution
All in all, refurbished transformers are a cost-effective way to meet short-term power needs when you can’t get a new unit right away or it doesn’t make sense to buy new. As long as you have a plan to obtain a new transformer at some point, a refurbished unit will make an excellent temporary solution.
Are you on a tight budget?
If you’re on a tight budget and can’t afford to pay full price for a brand-new transformer, then a refurbished one might be your only option. It wouldn’t be the best move for your long-term needs, but if your budget is set in stone, you don’t have a choice. In that case, it’s extremely important that you obtain your transformer from a reputable manufacturer that knows how to refurbish units to maximize their extended lifespan.
Be prepared to buy a factory new transformer
At some point, your refurbished transformer will break down or fail, and you’ll need to get a new one. However, in the short-term, buying a pre-owned unit can save you time and money, and keep you in business while you wait for a new unit to become available.
