Are ATVs Just for Joyriding?

Riding all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) is a fast-growing sport. More enthusiasts drive their ATVs on trails, at parks, on desert landscapes, and more. But there’s a misconception among many newcomers to the hobby that ATVs only exist for joyriding.

Keep in mind that any straddled motorized off-highway vehicle with handlebars that sports four low-pressure tires can be defined as an ATV. As such, there are many different types of ATVs that are designed for various uses. With the right ATV parts and accessories — you can do all sorts of things with the vehicle.

1. Plow Plow Plow

You probably have to deal with snow on your driveway every winter if you live in a cold part of the world. You can either clear that snow with a shovel and some de-icing salt, use a snowblower, hire a snow ploughing truck service, or modify your ATV with a snowplow kit.

An ATV snow plow is a good option when dealing with low to moderate snow depths because it’s fast and agile. It can also clear snow from sidewalks and other awkward areas.

ATVs can be modified to serve homeowners in other ways too. For example, when a weed killer is latched to the vehicle, it can help with landscaping duties. Likewise, an ATV with mowing equipment can help landscapers clear grass. People living on farms can also modify ATVs to plow fields on a budget or spread seed efficiently through a spreader.

2. Hunting

Many hunters, tired of chasing animals like deer through the woods, try to gain an advantage with light and quick ATVs. In minutes, they can get close to their prey for the perfect shot. However, some hunting enthusiasts consider ATVs unethical because they stack the odds too heavily in the hunter’s favor. That’s why many localities have banned ATVs for hunting.

Of course, ATVs can be a disadvantage if the prey runs into teeming environments like a dense forest. Loud ATVs can also scare away creatures such as rabbits, foxes, etc.

3. Transportation

An ATV is probably not the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of transport vehicles. However, a strong ATV with a trailer can help transport all sorts of items such as wood, concrete, etc. ATVs with log loaders can also load and transport surprisingly large logs.

4. Rescue

An ATV probably doesn’t come to mind when you think of rescue vehicles. But ATVs can be perfect for forest rangers looking for lost hikers or moving between checkpoints. Rescuers can also use ATVs to pull people out of thick and deep mud, haul broken ATVs, or transport heavy equipment.

5. Camping

While everyone loves camping, no one enjoys dragging heaving camping gear through the forest to areas inaccessible with regular vehicles. With an ATV, you can easily move all your supplies through the forest or attach a trailer. The vehicle also comes in handy during an emergency in the middle of no where or for recreational activities in the woods.

These are just some of the ways you can use an ATV aside from joyriding. Whether you need a vehicle for transportation, safety, or utility, the right ATV can get the job done.
