Detroit is one of the most important cities in the US when it comes to sports. Baseball’s fans are seeing the passion for the Tigers in a season where the team is holding its ground very well in the American League Central. They are first in the division with a nice 9-game advantage over the Cleveland Guardians, while we write this. But the city is pretty passionate about winter sports, too. Let’s see what every sports enthusiast needs to know about the Motor City.

Tigers

The iconic “Olde English D” logo is shown with pride everywhere in the world. The team has won four World Series and shocked the world last season, gaining access to the playoffs with a lot of wins in the final two months of the year. They have been missing from the postseason since 2014 and seem pretty eager to go back there in 2025. The Tigers were the first team to get to 60 wins this season and, even if it actually doesn’t mean anything, it shows how determined they are to do well.

Opening Day is usually a holiday in Detroit and hundreds of thousands of fans converge in Downtown D, at the start of April, to cheer on the Tigers. It’s not unusual for workers to take a day off and tailgate together, hoping for a successful season.

Lions

Another sport, another cat. The Detroit Lions are pretty hot in the NFL right now. The start of the new season is just a short time away, scheduled for Sept. 4, 2025, with the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles against the Dallas Cowboys. The Lions’ first game will be Sept. 7, 2025, on the road, against the Green Bay Packers. Fans who will not be fortunate enough to follow the team on the road will be able to do it on TV, from home or in a pub, sipping drinks with friends and other fans. In addition, for those who would like to bet on this and other games, it is possible to do so thanks to the many Michigan sports betting operators online, found at the page just linked. We are pretty sure, there will be a lot of people tuned in for the NFC North showdown that opens the season.

Coach Dan Campbell lost both of his coordinators this offseason. Ben Johnson will lead the Chicago Bears and Aaron Glenn will coach in New York, with the Jets. For this reason, some analysts are wondering how the Lions will fare. Campbell isn’t worried though. He will stay true to his keyword: grit, and pound the rock with purpose and determination. The quest for the Super Bowl is about to begin. Detroit is among the favourites for the NFC crown, as it has been these past two seasons. It is time to show that it can win the games that count.

Pistons

The Pistons have been in the city since 1957 and won three NBA championships. The last was in 2004 and they weren’t at their best since. Under a new regime, the team is doing better after a terrible 2023-2024 season, finished with the league’s worst record (14-68). J.B. Bickerstaff and the new president of basketball operations, Trajan Langdon, brought new energy and a fresh perspective. Star guard Cade Cunningham gladly accepted the change and made his first All-Star team this season. The future seems way brighter now.

Red Wings

Ice hockey is a passion in Detroit. The Red Wings are one of the original 6 teams in the NHL and are well-known all around the world. They have won 11 Stanley Cups and are like a roller coaster. They tend to open great cycles (and win 4 championships in a decade) and terrible ones (when they are referred to as Dead Wings by the fans) but, hey, this is sport! You win some and you lose some!
