Movie Review: “Bowling for Columbine”

Movie Review: Bowling for ColumbineWhen humor is the only way to bring a social dilemma into full focus, Michael Moore is your man. The guy behind the ingeniously funny yet incredibly heartfelt documentary “Roger and Me,” Moore returns with a satirical look at the gun problems in the United States. The title “Bowling for Columbine” is connected to one of his many agendas during the film. A few hours before the two students gunned down a teacher and 12 classmates at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold went to their high school bowling class.

While Moore doesn’t find any connection between bowling and the incident, he does inquire about the other “excuses” given by the politicians and media. Finding even more humorous material in lighter topics, Moore ventures to a Michigan bank that offers a gun to anyone opening a new account. Moore shows up, deposit slip in hand, receives his brand new rifle, and then inquires: “Isn’t it dangerous to be giving away guns in a bank?”

The world needs to applaud Moore for his straightforward quest to bring more attention to some of the country’s most serious problems. His use of humor really makes the audience enjoy his discussions and his treks from one place to another. Moore also accomplishes bigger and better things at the end of the movie, which goes to show that one man can do a lot just through film. A documentary in nature, “Bowling for Columbine” still feels like a work of fiction. The two hours fly by in no time, and when you’re through, you’ll definitely want a second helping.
