We were really looking forward to testing the 2013 BMW X1 xDrive28i, especially in a rather snow-filled Midwest winter. From the time we stepped into the sleek luxury crossover, this new offering from BMW didn’t disappoint.

Exterior

Typical BMW proportions, expressive, vibrant surfaces and signature BMW X model design cues shape the appearance of the BMW X1. A sweeping bonnet, long wheelbase and set-back passenger compartment emphasize the car's dynamic talent, while attractive light and shade effects hint at its inherent agility. The versatility and robustness of a BMW X model are reflected in elements such as the black edging at the lower edge of the body and wide wheel arches.

When viewed from the front, the powerful stance of the new BMW X1 on the road and its aura of quality are now accentuated with even greater intensity. A larger number of surfaces painted in body color highlight the car's enhanced elegance. The path of the car's lines, which converge on the license plate mount from either side of the BMW kidney and forge outwards in the lower section of the bumper, is borrowed from BMW X models in higher vehicle segments. The newly designed headlights allow a detailed view of the advanced light technology within. And a chrome-coated accent strip now cuts across the top of the twin circular headlights. Meanwhile, an LED accent light included as part of the optional xenon light package, complete with LED light rings for the daytime driving lights provides the classic BMW focused look. The 18-inch light alloy wheels looked magnificent from all angles! The swage line rising steadily to the rear of the car, another character line extending the contours of the side window surrounds as it heads towards the rear, and powerfully bulging wheel arches allow the BMW X1 to cut a very distinctive figure side-on. The pronounced side skirts are a signature feature of BMW X models, while the side direction indicators are now integrated into the newly designed exterior mirrors.

The premium feel of the new BMW X1 is also underlined at the rear by the new subdivision of apron, bumper and under guard, with the repositioned reflectors now also bordered by surfaces painted in body color. As a result, the black plastic elements are slimmer, while the silver-colored under guard has a more striking surface structure. Right from the start, when you see the 2013 BMW X1 xDrive28i exterior, you know this machine means business!

Interior

The modifications to the design of the new BMW X1 interior create an even more vivid showcase of the sporty driving pleasure, cutting-edge versatility and premium feel this car provides. The side of the center console angled towards the driver is now shallower, spotlighting the driver-focused nature of the cockpit design. High-quality electroplated surrounds for the gearshift lever and center console cup holder, a chrome strip for the headlight switch and chrome touches for the side edging of the Control Display (when the optional navigation system is specified) add the finishing touches to the interior's cloak of exclusivity. Plus, the air vent surrounds are given a high-gloss black surface.

Our test model was loaded with a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, rear view camera, park distance control, ambiance lighting, comfort access keyless entry, panoramic moon roof, auto-dimming mirrors, power front seats, lumbar support, voice command real-time traffic, navigation, BMW assist with Bluetooth, iPod and USB adapter, auto-stop/start function and front and rear head protection system.

Performance

Our X1 sported a 2.0 liter BMW TwinPower Turbo 16 valve inline 4 cylinder engine with high precision direct injection, valvetronic, and double-VANOS steplessly variable valve timing. The X1's engine is configured to help maximize both performance and fuel economy, and to aid efficiency, an Auto Start/Stop system which stops the engine when idling at stoplights and then smartly restarts it when the driver lifts off the brake. At times, there was some jerking with this fuel saving feature, but in just a few days it was hardly noticeable. The handling is about as sharp as top-rated sports sedans and the powertrain outright hauls you know what! The 2013 BMW X1 xDrive28i is simply a joy to drive and will give you reasons to leave the house or office for a new driving adventure each time behind the wheel. Fuel efficiency is strong with 22mpg in the city and up to 33mpg in highway driving.

Overview

We have tested many cars and trucks and the 2013 BMW X1 xDrive28i is one of the most fascinating vehicles we have driven. For a sticker price of $45,095, there is a lot of style, luxury, quality and excitement at your finger tips. Not all cars are built the same and they certainly don’t drive the same, but you can bet that the 2013 BMW X1 xDrive28i will put fear in her rival’s chassis!
