Matthew McConaughey in “Interstellar”

We’re big fans of Matthew McConaughey, and that was even before he showed the world that he could be a serious actor. For years he relied on his charm and good looks to effortlessly handle leading roles in romantic comedies, and he did it well. Sure, we have some friends and colleagues who didn’t appreciate his schtick. The drawl, the easy grin, and the “alright, alright, alright” vibe drives certain people crazy. The Lincoln car commercials seemed to irritate one friend for no good reason.

At one point in his career, Matthew decided to take on more challenging roles, and frankly he elevated himself to one of the better actors of his generation. He won a well-deserved Oscar, Golden Globe, and SAG Award for Best Actor for his role in “Dallas Buyers Club” (2013), where he lost 50 lbs to play AIDS patient Ron Woodroof in a stunning performance. He followed that up with his iconic performance as Rust Cohle in the first season of “True Detective” (2014). Matthew starred opposite Woody Harrelson in a show that became a cultural phenomenon and still gets talked about again and again to this day. That same year he starred in Christopher Nolan‘s “Interstellar.”

Matthew McConaughey didn’t just survive being typecast; he detonated the typecasting, rebuilt himself on his own terms, and somehow came out the other side more beloved than ever.

Matthew is also a huge Texas Longhorns fan, and he shows up often on the sidelines and has basically become a mascot for the team.

Interviews

We interviewed Matthew back in 2008 . . . here’s Will’s intro to the interview:

I’ll be honest with you: for as much as I enjoyed doing this interview, my wife enjoyed me doing it a whole lot more. When I first told her that I had been offered the opportunity to chat with Matthew McConaughey, her first reaction was denial. (“No, you’re not!” “I am!” “No, you’re not!” “Swear to God, I AM!”) Once she wrapped her head around it, of course, she was on the phone immediately to tell her mother…and her friends…and, well, you get the idea.
