I’ve always enjoyed tequila. From college-era shots to sipping premium tequila in Mexico, I’ve experienced this spirit in just about every way imaginable over the years. And yes, tequila has absolutely earned its reputation as a certified “panty dropper.” I still remember a certain party where mango margaritas did more than their fair share to loosen the vibe…
So when a friend recently told me he’d tried the best tequila he’d ever tasted, I paid attention. When he added that it was a brand launched by Matthew McConaughey and his wife, I laughed . . . and instantly became skeptical. Celebrity tequila? Sure. But I tried it anyway. And damn . . . it completely lived up to the hype.
Pantalones is easily my favorite tequila right now. I first tried the Añejo and was blown away by just how smooth it was. It’s delicious neat or over a few ice cubes. In fact, it almost feels like a waste to use it in a cocktail—though it handles that assignment with ease. Since then, I’ve tried both the Blanco (pictured here) and the Reposado, and they’re just as impressive. I usually enjoy them over ice, but I’ve found the Añejo tastes even better with a fresh slice of orange.
The Lineup: Smooth, Versatile, and Sippable
Each bottle is priced between $45 and $55, which is a steal for this tequila. Here’s more on each version:
- Blanco: Unaged and crystal-clear, with bright notes of honey, citrus, and fresh agave. It’s crisp and lively—ideal for classic margaritas or palomas.
- Reposado: Aged nine months in American oak barrels, offering hints of sweet fruit, vanilla, and oak.
- Añejo: Aged 15 months, delivering richer flavors like butterscotch, maple, and caramel. A cozy choice for colder nights. Try it with orange slice!

In November 2025, they dropped a holiday limited-edition Extra Añejo, aged 36 months and finished in Texas bourbon barrels for a warm, smoky twist—like “your favorite couch with extra cushion,” as Matthew puts it. The bottle’s got a belt-buckle-inspired label for that extra Texan flair. It’s flying off shelves, with only a limited run available.
The Backstory: A Kick in the Pants for Tequila
The McConaugheys first met in 2006 at a Los Angeles nightclub, where Matthew famously wooed his future wife, Camila, with a homemade margarita—naturally. Married since 2012 and now parents to three kids, the couple decided to enter the booming tequila market not to chase trends, but to revive what they see as the spirit’s original sense of fun. “The world doesn’t need another celebrity tequila, but tequila sure could use a kick in the pants,” they quipped in their launch statement. And the name Pantalones? In Spanish, it means “pants.” While brainstorming, Camila joked about how tequila has a way of loosening any situation—sometimes leading to pants being dropped. And just like that, the name was born. All of their marketing has followed this theme,
Launched in October 2023, Pantalones is crafted at Tequilera TAP (NOM 1614), a family-owned distillery in Amatitlán, Jalisco, Mexico—the heart of tequila country. It’s made from 100% Blue Weber agave, certified organic, and free of additives, with a clear emphasis on sustainability and quality. To ensure the brand lived up to its ambitions, the McConaugheys partnered with industry veterans at Davos Brands (the company behind Ryan Reynolds’ Aviation Gin) to oversee production and distribution—making sure the tequila earns its reputation without cutting corners.
Find It and Try It
We can’t recommend this one strongly enough. If you love tequila, this is a must-have for your home part. If you’re not a huge fan, this brand just might make you a tequila lover! And of course, it’s a great party-starter with a date or your regular lady!
