Pick of the Week: “Bring Her Back”
Australian-born filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou earned plenty of buzz with their debut feature, “Talk to Me,” so it’s hardly a surprise that the twin brothers’ sophomore effort sparked a bidding war among studios. Though “Bring Her Back” didn’t enjoy the same box office success as their first movie, it’s yet another visceral and deeply unsettling horror film that boasts a chilling performance from Sally Hawkins playing against type as a grieving foster mother willing to go to extreme lengths to bring back her deceased daughter. Unfortunately, the movie requires an enormous suspension of disbelief due to some questionable character choices and one extremely incompetent social worker. My biggest issue with the film, however, has more to do with the content than the execution, as there are some truly disturbing moments involving children that probably warrant a trigger warning. That alone makes “Bring Her Back” a difficult film to sit through, and although there’s much to admire about it, your mileage will vary depending on just how much you can stomach the material.
Extras include a director commentary by Danny and Michael Philippou, a making-of featurette and a deleted scene. FINAL VERDICT: RENT
