Chris Pratt in "Mercy"

Blu Tuesday is a weekly column where we review the newest Blu-ray and 4K releases, along with a brief rundown of the included bonus material, to determine whether they’re worth buying, renting or skipping.

Pick of the Week: “Mercy”

Director/producer Timur Bekmambetov has built a career around gimmicky narrative devices, from Screenlife movies like “Unfriended,” “Searching” and “Profile” to his latest film, which employs a real-time countdown clock à la “24.” Unfortunately, the gimmick doesn’t really add anything to the experience — it’s just window dressing to create fake suspense — while stars Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson are equally as ineffective. That’s because, although “Mercy” boasts an intriguing premise centered around the use of technology in law enforcement and the judicial system (no doubt inspired by Philip K. Dick’s “Minority Report”), the movie is quickly undone by some massive plot holes and nonsensical logic that is almost comical at times. The whole thing feels so thoughtless and poorly executed that it could have been produced entirely by AI, and no one would be able to tell the difference. FINAL VERDICT: SKIP
