The NBA’s Gambling Scandals Create a Mess for the League

What a mess for the NBA.

The NBA is facing unprecedented pressure from a sprawling federal investigation into illegal gambling that erupted in late 2024 and exploded in October 2025, implicating high-profile figures like Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, and others in schemes involving insider betting, rigged poker games, and mafia ties.

Some people are blaming the legalization of sports betting, but that’s a very simplistic way of looking at this. The fact is that it was the legal sportsbooks that noticed irregular prop bets and then notified the NBA and the authorities. This kind of nonsense has been happening for years. Now, with regulated sportsbooks, there are mechanisms to spot this type of cheating. On the other hand, it is true that there are more bets out there, and prop bets in particular make it much easier to rig a bet.

The Chauncey Billups case is even more bizarre, as it’s been alleged that Mr. Big Shot was luring players to high stakes poker games that were run by the mob. Those games were ellegedly rigged with all sorts of tactics like using hidden cameras to reveal cards held by the players, marked cards and X-ray tables. It’s alleged that Billups has been involved in this for years, which frankly is stunning given how much money he’s made over the years in the NBA as a player and a coach.

Billups may also be involved in the sports betting scandal by tipping “tanking info” like sitting starters at crucial times in games.

This scandal comes at a time when the sports betting industry is under a lot of scrutiny. Young men are becoming addicted to the betting apps, and the prop bets are enticing criminals to work with players to rig bets. It’s a bad look, and this threatens the new cash cow for the sports leagues.

Also, the Billups and Rozier cases may be the tip of the iceberg. Stay tuned!
