There is something eerie casting a pall over this whole movie. The mood is very similar to Stanley Kubrick‘s “The Shining,” which also featured a comparably talented little boy. Only this time you might not be able to put your finger on just what is causing all the uneasiness, though there are ample clues strewn throughout. I’ve heard people say they had it all figured out from the beginning, and I’ve seen those who are flabbergasted by the ending. Actually, it doesn’t matter. Either way the movie will be just as satisfying.
Bruce Willis, in a departure from his normal snide, tough guy role, plays a caring child psychologist trying to help a very disturbed little boy. Much of the movie is just conversations between these two. But don’t worry, enough happens the rest of the time to keep it interesting. This is a very strong psychological thriller, but there are a couple of weak spots. Once you figure out what’s really going on, it gets tiresome watching the movie keep up the charade, and continue dispersing clues. It’s also a bit heavyhanded with the sentimentality at the end. The director slowly developed and maintained an intense gravity, then, at the very end, he sold-out for some Ghost-like cuteness.
Still, all in all, this is a great lights-out kind of movie that will provide a few chills. Cuddle up in the dark with your date, and don’t let on if you figure it out before she does.
