In addition to the Academy Awards, there are numerous film award shows that are getting bigger every year. They offer not only to honor those who are the best and the brightest in the film industry but they introduce the viewing audience to the new players, the new talent and introduce us to great films which the marketing machines may have overlooked in order to serve the bottom line. And there is no denying that “pretty people watching” is a pleasure which we all enjoy. So keep up with what is hot and trendy and up and coming in the world of film, issues and hot new faces.

On NBC in January, catch the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Golden Globe Awards. This usually offers one of the most entertaining broadcasts for one simple reason – alcohol. Rather than cramming the audience in theater seats, this show sets them up in tables and let’s them drink during the show. They also cover the lower-rent TV awards as well, so the atmosphere is not nearly as stuffy or self-important as what we’ve come to expect from the Oscars.

In January on TBS and TNT the Screen Actor’s Guild will honor it’s own with 2 randomly selected panels, one for film and one for television, to receive honors voted by peers only. This is a great opportunity to see who the actors watch and find to be the best.

In August FOX network presents the Teen Choice Awards. Every year this show attracts more attention and has more star power than the last. This age group is huge to moviemakers and the show is hot, hot, hot.

In February the Independent Spirit Awards are broadcast from the beaches of Santa Monica. This is definitely the casual side of the awards shows and showcases the creative drive behind the best in movie making.

The MTV Movie Awards has become a huge show because it can be counted on to deliver outrageous antics from numerous celebs, on and off stage. The spring time event has drawn the biggest stars and showcases the hippest elements of what is hot in Hollywood.

The People’s Choice Awards in January and aired on CBS is all that YOU want it to be. Vote for your favorite film, television show, actress, etc and let your favorites be counted. You may also win a chance to appear on the show by submitting your taped vote and telling why you chose your favorite.

The BET Awards honor the achievements of African American artists in film, television, music, and more. While this used to be a venue of minority interest it has rocketed into the mainstream with the huge success and popularity of Hip-Hop and the cross-over power that Black entertainers have gained over the years.

”The ultimate bad movie awards” is the Stinkers claim to fame. Moviefone, Rotten Tomatoes, Internet Movie Database, and Box Office Mojo all contribute to the tally the worst films and performances of the year. In January The Stinkers will announce some of the worst of 2005 giving you a chance to caste your vote.

The Golden Raspberry Award Foundation has gained momentum over the years as the antithesis of The Oscars. The Razzies have also gained more than a little respect. Actors and actresses actually accept the awards in good humor. Check out the website and see Halle Barry’s gushing and jovial acceptance speech.
