Cigar review of Arturo Fuente – Hemingway Short Story

Arturo Fuente – Hemingway Short Story

Cigars Home / Vices Channel / Bullz-Eye Home

Each year in the autumn months, the cigar industry follows the auto and fashion industries and “rolls” out its new cigars for the coming year. It’s a fun and interesting time as you get to sample what your favorite blenders and manufacturers are betting on as their next “big hit.” Of course, these same manufacturers will continue to produce their perennial winners, but they may also discontinue a cigar that is one of your favorites. This happens more often to those whose taste preferences wander from the norm.

Among the new, you will find things you like and dislike, but it is one of the things about this hobby that keeps it interesting and fresh. So, don’t be afraid, embrace change and experimentation, and you just might find something good. Okay that was your life lesson for the day!

I must admit, I do look forward to reviewing a number of these new entries myself, and will bring them to the attention of you, the Bullz-Eye faithful. However, for today, I am reviewing a favorite among cigar smokers and one that has been around for a few years, Arturo Fuente’s Hemingway Short Story.

So, lets get smokin’!

Cigar Review:

Arturo Fuente – Hemingway Short Story

Size: Robusto (4 inches long, 43 ring gauge)
Price: $6.50 to $8 range

The Hemingway Short Story is probably the best short smoke value in the U.S. market today. Produced by the most recognized name in that market, Arturo Fuente, a company synonymous with good, consistent, quality smokes and whose combined product lines make it one of the largest, most successful cigar producers in the world. In addition to the Hemingway line, they are probably recognized even more through their hugely popular, super premium, Opus-X brand. On the lower end, the Arturo Fuente Curly Heads are also popular with a different segment of the cigar-smoking public.

Tobacco blend:

  • Wrapper: Africa (Cameroon)
  • Filler: Dominican
  • Binder: Dominican

Context

A young gentleman at the bar in Denver’s Sullivans Steakhouse was nice enough to treat me to the most recent Short Story that I smoked. We had earlier struck up a conversation on business, in which he asked my advice on a couple of things. As usual, I was more than happy to share my perspective. I guess the fact that I was wearing a suit led him to believe that my advice was semi-sound. He thanked me by insisting on gifting me a cigar of my choice. Though I was hesitant to accept, I eventually picked out the Hemingway Short Story as it was relatively affordable. No doubt the smoking of the Short Story was worthwhile; only time will tell whether my advice was worth the investment.

Look and feel

The cigar is gorgeous and generously packed, rolled to perfection. Don’t be fooled by its looks -- it is about as small a cigar as I would care to smoke, but it smokes a lot bigger than it is. Its most striking feature is its silky wrapper: there is no doubt that the smoker is about to enjoy a premium cigar. The band on the cigar was not overly done, but was certainly classy.

Aroma and Taste

The pre-lit aroma was fine and the first half of the cigar’s flavor was just right. It was a straightforward smoke, with only a little bit of variety in flavors. The taste of wood with some cedar notes was the predominant flavor throughout this medium-bodied smoke. The burn was maintenance free and even, allowing the smoker to focus on the aroma and taste. It was excellent, though it did get a little harsh in the latter stage of the smoke (my fault for taking it down to my fingers).

RATING: 9.1 (on a scale of 1 to 10)

The Hemingway line from Arturo Fuente, especially the Short Story size, is a popular selection among cigar smokers. I hope Fuente will be marketing Hemingways for a long, long time. If you haven’t smoked one of these, whether you are a rookie or have been smoking for awhile, do yourself a favor and try one.
