The company we know as Nissan today stretches all the way back to 1914 when it got started selling military-grade trucks. Formerly sold under the 'Datsun' brand, Nissan has become increasingly independent over the past several decades. In 1999, Nissan made one of those strange auto partnerships with Renault out of France. Renault now owns over 44 percent of Nissan, while Nissan retains 15 percent of Renault shares.

Today, Nissan has been putting its resources toward the green initiative. It started with a hybrid system based off Toyota's Prius, but the company has since built its own hybrid technology, which is said to be more efficient and less complicated than Toyota's. In late 2010, Nissan plans to unveil the Leaf, a five-door hatchback electric car. According to Nissan, the Leaf has a range of 100 miles in the city, which is where electric vehicles are expected to become most popular.
