Why are fishnets and fishnet stockings so sexy? You can check out the photos below and you’ll see why.

Many point to the flappers and showgirls in the 1920’s as a driving force for the inspiration for fishnet stockings. Hemlines were rising to just barely below the knee. They were sexy and also provided the functional advantage of providing easier range of motion over the clothe stockings of the time. Fishnets continued to be associated with a ‘loose’ type of woman especially as they gained popularity in print-p#rn and pin-up girls of the 1950s.

Women started showing much more leg in the 60s with the emergence of the miniskirt. This provided even more opportunities to experiement with different types of stockings. In the 1970s, punk and goth types embraced the fishnet look, often ripping holes in them as another way of subverting mainstream fashion. We loved that edgy look!

Madonna took things to an entirely new level in the 1980s as she started incorporating fishnets into tops, gloves, and body suits, inspiring tons of 80s girls to add these to their outfits. Yes, it was a wild time!
