Ford has unveiled the all-new 2022 Ford Maverick, a full-hybrid, compact pickup truck. The Maverick comes with a standard, hybrid powertrain and also offers a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that offers all-wheel drive as an option.
Ford’s re-entry in the compact pickup market fills out its pickup lineup, positioned under the Ranger mid-size truck in Ford’s lineup. “The Maverick product proposition is like nothing else out there. It’s a great-looking truck featuring four doors with room for five adults, a standard full-hybrid engine with city fuel economy that beats a Honda Civic, plenty of towing and hauling for weekend trips or do-it-yourself projects, and it starts under $20,000,” said Todd Eckert, Ford truck group marketing manager. “Maverick challenges the status quo and the stereotypes of what a pickup truck can be. We believe it will be compelling to a lot of people who never before considered a truck.” With Ford dropping sedans from it’s lineup, the brand needs trucks and SUVs to pick up the sales slack.
There’s nothing Earth-shattering in the design of the Maverick. It’s simple and clean with a sharp front grille.
The base XL model comes with a hybrid powertrain that uses a 2.5-liter inline-four and an electric motor, equipped with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). This configuration produces 191 horsepower and an expected 40 mpg in the city. This hybrid Maverick will only be available with front-wheel drive for now. A nonhybrid turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder is also available and can be equipped with either front- or all-wheel drive. It will generate 250 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque, using an eight-speed automatic. The hybrid model provides 1,500 pounds of payload capacity and will tow up to 2000 pounds, while the turbo 2.0-liter will tow 4000 pounds such as a typical 23-foot camper.
