he Hitchhiker” was an anthology horror series that ran on HBO in the 1980s. This DVD compiles 10 half-hour episodes from the series. The episodes feature some well-known actors and actresses, including William Dafoe, Gary Busey, Helen Hunt, Kirstie Alley, Joe Pantoliano and Margot Kidder.
The series was known for the spooky stories introduced by the hitchhiker and lots of gratuitous nudity. Naturally, it became a hit. Each episode generally focused on some manipulative jerk who gets what’s coming to him or her. The hitchhiker then wraps things up will a moral for the viewer. The stories are very dark, and sometimes offer great suspense, even if they don’t quite live up to the DVD’s promise of “ten terrifying tales.”
Fans of the program, however, won’t be disappointed. Most of the episodes are entertaining, and the extras provide interesting commentary. If you haven’t seen the show and you like suspense, check it out as a rental.
