Clothes as a Tool

Do clothes make the man? They certainly help. As John Molloy, the author of Dress For Success once wrote, "Clothes are a tool to show others how you expect to be treated." So, what message are your clothes sending?
Let us start at the bottom. What's on your feet? One of the first things women notice about men are their shoes. Are your shoes scuffed, worn, and dirty, or shiny and clean? If you are dressed professionally or "business casual", a good basic shoe is the black leather lace-up. Brands like Bostonian or Ecco are good, moderately-priced choices. You do not want to get too fancy here; just pick a nice, clean design without any elaborate seams or stitching. You can start by looking for deals on the internet; sites like offers.com will probably enable you to save as much as 50 percent off of normal retail prices.
But, how do you know you are choosing an attractive shoe? Now is the time to give one of your female friends a call. Women are inherently better at noticing subtle differences than men, particularly when it comes to fashion. Tell her what web page you are on, and the two of you can have fun picking out a pair of shoes together.
Another general tip is to dress up as much as possible for the occasion. You do not want to look stuffy, but try to dress up a bit more than everyone else. If you are going to a barbecue, think about wearing a polo shirt rather than a T-shirt. At a dinner party, a nice pair of wool slacks and a fitted button-down shirt are good choices rather than your normal jeans. Any exception to this rule is the workplace; you do not want to dress up more than your boss and intimidate him or make him think you are after his job!
