Valentine's Day Gift Guide

The pressure is on. February 14th is looming and you know that you have to do something, but what? Is it your first Valentine’s Day together? Maybe you’re into this tradition for a few years and you’ve been ratcheting up the ante to include everything but that sparkling bauble.

Whatever you do, it is going to send a signal. You may not know that you are sending it but your gift will be scrutinized like the post mortem victim of a violent crime; not only by your girl but by every one of her friends and co-workers, family and potentially, that ex who may be waiting for a second chance.

We've suggested you stick to the classics in years past, and Shelly Perry lays out a bunch of options along those lines below, but this year we wanted to mix it up by having gadget guru Jeff Morgan break down the smartphone market to figure out which model may be best for your valentine.

Savor Your Singleness

Before moving on to the guide, our friends at Zwack are pointing out that while Valentine’s Day is often thought of as a day for lovers, there are scores of very happy unattached individuals that celebrate Valentine’s Day entirely different. Zwack, the National Shot of Hungary, is encouraging these “singles” over the age of 21 to visit their Facebook page and Savor Their Singleness! Visitors to the Facebook page will have the opportunity to share Savor Your Singleness images and themed drink recipes with other happy singles.

Valentine’s Day smartphones

Face it, fellas: You aren’t the only one in the relationship that wants a smartphone anymore. In fact, it’s entirely possible that some of you may have wives or girlfriends who know more than you do about smartphone tech. Whatever your situation, a smartphone might be the perfect gift for your valentine. It shows that you care about communication with your S.O. and gives you more ways to keep in touch. Just what you’ve always wanted, right? Right. Here are a few models to consider this year.

GOOGLE NEXUS S: For the tech savvy valentine

The second Google-branded phone makes serious improvements above and beyond the first. It ships standard with Android 2.3, the Gingerbread build, 16GB of memory, a 5 mega-pixel camera with built-in flash, and a 480 x 800 resolution screen. The Nexus S also has the ability to function as a Wi-Fi hotspot, features Google Navigation, and has the best text input of any Android device to date.

This is not the phone for first time smartphone users. If your wife/girlfriend is a supergeek, though, the Nexus S is perfect. It’s a next generation phone with all the bells and whistles that make Android a great platform.

IPHONE: For the fashionable valentine

Just last week, Verizon began taking pre-orders for the CDMA version of the iPhone, making it the perfect time to get your hands on Apple’s iOS. The iPhone has become the gold standard for the smartphone experience, and with good reason. The operating system is sleek, easy to use, and has the most robust App Store of any of the competing platforms. The iPhone also has FaceTime, Apple’s exclusive video chat service. If your S.O. has friends or family that also use Macs, she’ll love FaceTime.

Even though the Verizon iPhone just launched, AT&T might still be the better carrier choice. Remember, the CDMA version of the phone that Verizon carries can’t do voice and data at the same time. That means you can’t help your girl find the spa you sent her to (nice touch, by the way) by using Google Maps while you’re on the phone.

DROID X: For the smartphone virgin

If this is going to be her first smartphone, consider the Droid X. The Droid X still runs Android, so it has all the advanced features she could ever use, but it’s not quite cutting edge. For a beginner, that’s a good thing. A lot of other people have the same operating system, so it will be familiar if she needs some help in a pinch. The Droid X has a massive screen, an 8 mega-pixel camera, and the ability to capture 720p video.

Another great feature of the Droid X is the battery life. A lot of smartphones suffer from limited battery life. The Droid X has some of the best reviews when it comes to longevity, meaning it won’t die out during those marathon texting/Facebook sessions.

Pre-load Tango for a little extra spice

Want to score extra points with your significant other? Consider pre-installing the Tango application, which is available on both the iOS and Android platforms. Tango is a video-calling service that, unlike FaceTime, works across platforms. It’s perfect if you and your valentine use different operating systems. The service works on Wi-Fi and 3G, and again, sends the message that you’ll do what it takes to make sure the two of you can always be in touch.

Just what you’ve always wanted, right? Right.

Classics help you play it safe

If you want to play it safe, then stick with the classics. This will make it more difficult for her and her friends to reach conclusions about your intent. A moderately priced bottle of champagne, a nice but not expensive floral arrangement, and high end box of chocolates with a nice, not funny, card says that you are classy and respectful. It’s hard to read a lot into this kind of gift, and it also doesn’t leave a lot of room for much criticism of any kind.
