ALSO: Fluid Ounces was featured in our The Best Albums You've (Probably) Never Heard feature.

For those just learning about In The New Old Fashioned Way now, can you give a nutshell summary of your career prior to its release?

Well, this was our second full length record, and we had been together for about four years or so at this point. Our first record had been well received by the college crowd and the music critics and such (meaning it did not sell particularly well), and had been a very "put together" album (meaning lots of overdubs and the like). With New Old Fashioned Way, we wanted to make a record that reflected more of our simple four-piece band live sound.

Do you have any anecdotes about the recording of the album?

There were far too many beers consumed during the making of that record for anything to be accurately recalled. But I do remember thrilling improvised head gear worn by engineer Eli Shaw, made of towels, robes, and gigantic headphones. This was designed to give him some degree of sonic isolation while recording in the same room the band was playing in.

Did you expect it to have a better commercial reception than it did?

Yes, I was still young enough to have delusions such as those.

Are you pleased to find that it still maintains enough of a following to make its way into this piece?

Indeed I am.

What are you doing now?

Still making Fluid Ounces records. We just finished one which will be called Instant Nostalgia and should be out...well...let's say by summertime. That should give us enough time. I am also starting a new band which will not feature the big heavy piano and will do a bit more of the traditional rocking out that the young adults have come to expect these days.
