V for Vendetta (2006)

Note to selves: If a poor economy ever forces us to accept jobs as heavily armed bodyguards for a totalitarian thug, and we later find ourselves facing a nearly super-powered self-styled masked revolutionary who talks just like Hugo Weaving and is armed with lots and lots of very pointy knives, by all that’s holy, aim for the head! This viciously action-packed moment from the controversial film version of Alan Moore and David Lloyd’s graphic novel is an arresting combination of outstanding stunt work and CGI to create one of the most brutally effective knife combat scenes in recent films. Brought to us by the Wachowski Brothers and director James McTeigue, the climatic confrontation between the long-haired lefty V and the vile Peter Creedy (Tim Pigott-Smith) employs a more bluntly Anglo variation on the fanciful, Hong Kong-derived battles of “The Matrix.” The bloodletting is one-part balletic superheroics, one part “The Wild Bunch” – it’s not all fun and games, especially for the poor sods taking a nasty little dagger to their carotid arteries. Ouch.
