Bullz-Eye Summer Movie Preview:
They call it blockbuster season. We call it re-gifting.
For as many must-see movies as we have ahead of us this summer, it’s easy to
forget that nearly everything else is a sequel, remake or adaptation. Even the
two most anticipated movies of the summer (you know what they are) are sequels.
(Well, prequels, if you want to get technical.) You can always expect a certain
amount of this, but 2005 might be the new standard for a complete dearth of
originality. Not convinced? Read the following lists. Weeping is optional.
Number of TV show adaptations: 3 (“Bewitched,” “The Honeymooners,” “The
Dukes of Hazzard”)
Number of remakes/remodels: 10 (“House of Wax,” “The Longest Yard,” “Mr. &
Mrs. Smith,” “Bad News Bears,” “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “Herbie:
Fully Loaded,” “War of the Worlds,” “Dark Water,” “The Pink Panther,” “Four
Brothers”)
Number of sequels/prequels: 4 (“xXx: State of the Union,” “Star Wars:
Episode III,” “Batman Begins,” “Deuce Bigalow, European Gigolo”)
Number of movies featuring cast members from “Old School”: 7 (“House of
Wax,” “Kicking and Screaming,” “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” “Bewitched,” “The Wedding
Crashers,” “The Dukes of Hazzard,” “3001”)
Yep, everything old is indeed new again. Join us as we break down the summer
movie schedule (which now begins in late April), and attempt to help you spend
your money wisely.
