The three-headed monster: Burk, Jackson and Smith
by: Shawn Griffin from SportsTerminal.com
Pg 1 of 1

It's that time of year again…football's over (the Arena Football League doesn't count), baseball hasn't officially started yet, March Madness is a few weeks away, the NBA is simply unwatchable…the weather (for me, at least) sucks…. Overall, it's just a depressing time in Griff's world.

Just when I thought I was going to have to make up some column dealing with sports and movie quotes or Seinfeld or some combination thereof, the wicked witch of the National Council of Women's Organizations reared her big, fat, ugly head. This monstrous wench couldn't be kept down for long. In addition, an ungrateful little nobody from a Division III college basketball team made the decision to turn her back on the American flag during the singing of the National Anthem before her games.

Could I let these stories pass without commenting on them? Of course not.

As Al Pacino says in "Godfather III," "Just when I thought I was out, THEY PULL ME BACK IN!"

Let's start with Martha Burk, the chairwoman of the National Council of Women's Organizations, who is leading the fight against the Augusta National Golf Club's all-male membership. She recently said she will seek a permit to demonstrate at the Masters.

Let's not forget what she's "fighting" for here -- she wants Augusta National to include in its membership rich female members. Don't lose sight of this important fact. Remember, this really won't have any effect whatsoever on typical women. It will not make their lives any better. It will, however, benefit some incredibly wealthy woman who happens to enjoy golfing, to go along with other activities such as shopping for expensive clothes and jewelry, and deciding which car to drive to brunch each day. I find it deliciously ironic that somebody of Burk's ilk, a person who no doubt derides tax cuts because they only benefit the "rich" (which, by the way, liberals now define as ANYBODY who simply pays taxes,) now fights as though the future of the feminist movement depends on whether or not a wealthy female member is admitted to a country club. Unreal. Forget about the woman who is in the homeless shelter trying to raise her kids while hiding from an abusive husband, Martha; forget about the thousands of women who die from breast cancer each year, Martha; forget about true and real discrimination some women face in the workplace, Martha…that's right -- society really owes you one for your courageous "fight." What great use of your time. Way to go, girl. Way to use your group's resources in good faith -- all of this for an epic battle to allow rich women in a country club for the super-wealthy….

Just when you think it can't get much worse, the extortion artist, Jesse Jackson, rears his ugly little lying face for the cameras. He has indicated his group will join the planned protests at Augusta National in support of Burk.

Way to look out for the little people, Jesse. Not only are you a lying thief who has the audacity to call yourself "Reverend" while at the same time fathering children with females other than your wife, but now we can add hypocrite to the growing list of derogatory names to go with the "Reverend" in your title. You love to say you fight for the "less privileged." Now we know the "real" Jesse -- fighting for rich golfers.

Martha and Jesse. I only hope that someday these two loudmouths are viewed as the scum they are, two morons who do nothing at all for society.

Let's move to women's college basketball, a sport I truly hold dear in my heart (along with about four other fans in the world). Either Toni Smith is a marketing genius who is purposely getting her Manhattanville College basketball team national exposure or she's an ungrateful little witch who should be forced to sleep with a fellow comrade like North Korea's Kim Jong II.

For those of you who aren't familiar with this story, Smith turns her back on the American flag during the National Anthem before her basketball games. In a statement, she wrote, "For some time now, the inequalities that are embedded into the American system have bothered me. As they are becoming progressively worse and it is clear that the government's priorities are not on bettering the quality of life for all of its people, but rather on expanding its own power, I cannot, in good conscience, salute the flag."

Let's get something straight here: There is a huge difference between standing up for what you believe in and doing what Toni Smith is doing. I know a lot of intelligent, thoughtful people who don't necessarily believe in the coming war with Iraq, and to be honest, sometimes I wonder if it's the right thing to do at this point. As far as I'm concerned, we should pack it up and move out of that desert, ban all of them from our land, and let them kill each other. They hate us. Why should we attempt to like them and get involved in their affairs?

That being said, to turn your back on the flag isn't a political statement -- it's a blatant display of disrespect to all of the men and women who have paid the ultimate price so that we can live freely in this incredible society in which we do, a society that puts up with complete fools like Toni Smith.

It's bad enough that she doesn't show respect for the flag and the anthem, but she has the nerve to take it a step further. She writes, "It will be a great day when our schools get all the money they need and the military has to hold a bake sale to buy a bomber." That statement in itself shows just how ignorant she is. Those "bombers" are the means by which this country safely and securely can exist for her to express her opinions, no matter how wrong and despicable they are. She should at least have the brains to understand that. As one of her opponents, Mount St. Mary junior Jess Varvatsas, said, "It's disgraceful. I'm against the war, but the flag stands for more than war." She's exactly right. Even if you are against the war, you don't turn your back on the flag. The flag and all that it stands for are the very reason you are able to state your opinion without fear of retribution by the government. Either they don't teach this at Manhattanville College or Toni Smith was daydreaming about the wildly successful WNBA when they were. I only wish she could expand her horizons and spend some time in some other countries next time she decides to show disrespect to the one in which she was lucky enough to be born. A few days in some third-world despotic nightmarish land like Cuba, North Korea or Iraq might wise her up a tad.

Martha, Jesse and Toni. This three-headed monster has the sanity of Robert Blake, the sex appeal of Jack Osborne, the intelligence of Joe Millionaire, the moral authority of Larry Flynt and the intestinal fortitude of the French. What a wonderful combination.
