Selig and Fehr -- the true enemies of baseball
by: Shawn Griffin from SportsTerminal.com
Pg 1 of 1

Did you hear the wonderful news?

Janet Reno look-alike Bud Selig announced this past Tuesday that management will not lock out the players this season. What Bud wants you to believe is that this means there will be no strike this season.

While it does mean that the owners won't strike first and lock the players out, it could mean that the players association could strike first and put an end to this season, which would be suicide if they did it. As most of you remember, the players' union struck in 1994 in anticipation of changes the owners were going to make, ending the season without a World Series for the first time in 90 years.

So what exactly is the problem?

I am not going to bore you with the details, but the bottom line is that you have two greedy entities -- the players and the owners -- who are totally unwilling to come up with a long-term agreement with the best interests of the fans and the game in mind. If you could get a look at the list of priorities that the players and the owners have, the fans would be just under "buy new diamond earrings for myself" (players) and "buy new diamond earrings for my wife and girlfriends" (owners).

I don't profess to be an expert on this issue, but speaking from a fan's perspective, I see two major problems in the way of any type of agreement.

Those two problems? Bud Selig and Donald Fehr.

Bud Selig is too weak to forge an agreement and Donald Fehr is too much of a prick to compromise and agree on a plan.

Fehr and the players have to realize that something must be done or all of the small- to medium-market teams are going to implode and the league will look like this in a few years: One division with six or seven teams -- L.A., Chicago, New York, Atlanta, Boston, San Francisco and Texas.

What does that mean? Fewer baseball jobs. Great going, Donald, you stupid a-hole. What tremendous foresight you have...and Bud, instead of fixing the problem, merely puts it off and allows both sides to become entrenched in their positions. Two numskulls like this are in charge of whether or not you and I will enjoy baseball.

Peter Uebberoth, where are you when we need you?

It's like we are allowing the inmates to make the prison rules. This makes me sick. Totally sick. Every time I see Donald Fehr, he reminds me of the type of guy who would sell his Grandma if it would put a buck in his pocket. This guy is an evil bastard who could care less about the fans and the game. Greed is the altar upon which he and most of the players worship.

Meanwhile, the owners aren't totally innocent on this issue, either. Maybe if some of them would show just an ounce of fiscal responsibility, baseball wouldn't be in such crappy shape. Maybe if they would get a real commissioner with some balls, they would get an agreement in which everybody is satisfied.

A few months ago, gutless Bud was before Congress, whining about how poor the owners are, while at the same time King George was giving Jason Giambi a 100-something million-dollar contract.

What's the answer? A salary cap or at least some type of revenue sharing of the television money.

Both sides have to do something or there won't be baseball in the near future. Then the players will have to get real jobs and guys like Donald Fehr can go back to chasing ambulances.

Not a bad proposition the more I think of it….
