George Karl...moron of the moment
by: Shawn Griffin from SportsTerminal.com
Pg 1 of 1

Sports are not only interesting for what occurs on the field, but off it as well. This past week, we were subjected to yet more stupidity from a sports figure as a certain coach from the land of cheese showed the world just how unintelligent we humans can be.

For this, he is my choice for the moron of the moment.

Milwaukee Bucks coach George Karl is a prime example of why most people should keep their opinions to themselves (with myself being exempted from this rule, of course, because I am a highly-trained specialist in this field).

I picked up the latest issue of Esquire magazine not because I wanted to read about George Karl, but because Cameron Diaz was half naked on the front cover. It's not that she's particularly hot or anything (although she's not too damn bad). I just can't get the character she played in the movie "Something About Mary" out of my head. Could you imagine being with a girl who watches SportstCenter and likes sports as much as you? Now that would make things SO much easier. You wouldn't have to feel guilty about sitting in front of your TV watching sports every waking moment of every weekend...you wouldn't have to make up for all of your sports-watching time by doing crap like shopping...you would have two incomes to wager on sporting events rather than one...geez, if she does exist somewhere out there, I will take her. Even if she's fat. Okay, I went too far. I take that back. Strike it from the record. I am still operating under the NFCNA policy (No Fat Chicks Need Apply).

Once again, I have strayed from the point of this column. I promise, it won't happen again.

In between reading about Diaz's infatuation with flatulence, I read the piece on Coach Karl. It was probably the biggest waste of my time since I sat through the movie "Summer Catch" on pay per view.

In the piece, Karl goes off on a variety of subjects, including the war on terrorism (he thinks the U.S. has gone too far), wearing underwear (which he doesn't) and the hiring practices of NBA owners (which he scoffs at as the "anointment of blacks"). It was a terrible piece. It was about as insightful and entertaining as a Baldwin brothers film festival.

Instead of shedding some light on the travails of an NBA coach in today's world, it tried to be so cute and quirky that it was nothing more than a boring read about a pompous jerk.

Besides all the other stupid things he spewed forth, his ramblings regarding the hiring of Doc Rivers by the Orlando Magic were particularly amusing if you enjoy the grumblings of a nitwit.

Karl said that Rivers was "anointed" head coach of the Magic while at the same time railing against the fact that his assistant coach can't even get an interview with an NBA team. "Doc does a great job -- and now there's gonna be four or five more anointments of the young Afro-American coach," he told the magazine.

First of all, what is an "Afro-American"? Although I personally don't use the term, I believe it is "African-American" not "Afro." Afroca? I don't think it exists.

Apparently, Karl has a problem with the fact that Doc Rivers did not have any coaching experience before he took over as coach of the Orlando Magic. I don't remember Karl saying anything when Larry Bird or Danny Ainge were hired as head coaches without any coaching experience. As Rivers said to the Orlando Sentinel, "Instead of reading about a pick-and-roll, I was out there doing it."

He played 13 years in the NBA and was widely considered one of the smartest players in the game. Why Karl doesn't respect this fact is beyond me.

Is Karl racist for saying this? No, just as a black person is not racist for simply saying that whites are chosen as coaches over blacks because of their skin color. I mean, I don't remember Tony Dungy being called a racist when he criticized NFL owners for not hiring more blacks, do you?

So if Karl isn't a racist, what exactly is he? Simple. He's a moron.

As I have written before and will continue to…owners pick coaches because they want to win. If a green colored person could coach a team to a title, the owners would pick that green person because the bottom line is winning -- if their team wins, they win. Winning equals $ for the owners. That's all they care about.

I just cannot imagine an owner saying, "Well, I really love the guy. I think he's a great coach, but he's white. That's a problem. Let's anoint a black guy." This is sports, not the government. You see, affirmative action doesn't apply to sports, and we can all be thankful for that. Doc Rivers was chosen because the owner of the Orlando Magic thought that he was the best man for the job, not because he's black. For Karl to think otherwise isn't racist, it's just plain stupid.

I don't care which side you are on -- if you think that owners and general managers these days choose coaches based on skin color, you are either living in the past or have a delusional mind.

Tony Dungy and George Karl are both wrong -- it's as clear as black and white.
