Kickers are justifiably an afterthought in fantasy football. It’s difficult to predict who will have a great year because kicker scoring is all about opportunities. You want your kicker to be on a team that can move the ball so that he gets lots of field goal attempts, but you don’t want his team to move the ball too well so that all he’s kicking are extra points. It’s best to wait until the end of the draft and pick a kicker after at least a half dozen are already gone. Hell, truth be told, you can wait until the final round to get your kicker and still be fine. Seriously. Check out some of the guys at the bottom of this page for proof.

STRONG LEGS IN THE BEST SITUATIONS
FANTASY FOOTBALL PREVIEW

Adam Vinatieri, IND (11.01)
40/41 XP, 20/25 FG, 0/2 FG 50+, 100 points
He’s a great kicker on a team with one of the league’s best offenses.

Shayne Graham, CIN (13.06)
47/47 XP, 28/32 FG, 0/1 FG 50+, 131 points
The Bengals should put up a lot of points and Graham will get his share.

Jason Elam, DEN (14.05)
43/44 XP, 24/32 FG, 1/4FG 50+, 115 points
Year after year, he’s always near the top of kicker scoring.

Neil Rackers, ARI (11.09)
20/20 XP, 40/42 FG, 6/7 FG 50+, 140 points
Arizona has a ton of offensive weapons, so moving the ball shouldn’t be a problem.

David Akers, PHI (15.01)
23/23 XP, 16/22 FG, 1/2FG 50+, 71 points
Donovan McNabb and Brian Westbrook will be able to move the ball, but will they be able to punch it in the endzone?

Josh Brown, SEA (15.01)
56/57 XP, 18/25 FG, 5/8 FG 50+, 110 points
Seattle has a great offense and Brown will continue to benefit from it.

STILL SOLID

Mike Vanderjagt, DAL (12.09)
52/52 XP, 23/25 FG, 0/0 FG 50+, 121 points
The "idiot kicker" moves on and kicks for a decent (but not great) offense.

Jay Feely, NYG (15.08)
43/43 points, 35/42 FG, 3/5 FG 50+, 148 points
The Giants offense is on the rise and Feely should get his fair share of attempts.

Matt Stover, BAL (15.09)
23/23 XP, 30/34 FG, 0/0 FG 50+, 113 points
Year after year, Stover seems to get a lot of field goal attempts.

Nate Kaeding, SD (16.05)
49/49 XP, 21/24 FG, 0/0 FG 50+, 112 points
LaDainian Tomlinson and Antonio Gates will ensure that Kaeding gets some looks at the uprights.

Jeff Reed, PIT (16.05)
45/45 XP, 24/29 FG, 0/2 FG 50+, 117 points
Will Bettis’ retirement mean more FG attempts for Reed?

Jason Hanson, DET (16.05)
27/27 XP, 19/24 FG, 2/4 FG 50+, 84 points
The arrival of Mike Martz signals an uptick in Hanson’s value.

John Kasay, CAR (15.10)
43/44 XP, 26/34 FG, 3/8 FG 50+, 121 points
Kasay has a good leg and kicks for one of the league’s better offenses.

Lawrence Tynes, KC (16.06)
44/45 XP, 27/33 FG, 2/3 FG 50+, 125 points
As long as the KC offense doesn’t nosedive with Al Saunders’ departure, Tynes should kick a lot of extra points.

Jeff Wilkins, StL (16.07)
36/36 XP, 27/31 FG, 4/5 FG 50+, 117 points
Is in the same boat as Tynes...always scores well because of his extra points.

DON’T SLEEP ON THE WAIVER WIRE

Ryan Longwell, MIN (16.01)
30/31 XP, 20/27 FG, 4/5 FG 50+, 90 points
After years in Green Bay, Longwell gets to kick in a dome.

John Carney, NO (undrafted)
22/22 XP, 25/32 FG, 0/0 FG 50+, 97 points
The Saints’ offense should be improved.

Olindo Mare, MIA (undrafted)
33/33 XP, 25/30 FG, 1/2FG 50+, 108 points
Culpepper’s arrival should signify more consistency at the QB position, meaning more looks for Mare.

Matt Bryant, TB (undrafted)
31/31 XP, 21/25 FG, 1/2FG 50+, 94 points
As the Bucs’ offense continues to improve, Bryant should get more looks.

Sebastian Janikowski, OAK (undrafted)
30/30 XP, 20/30 FG, 0/3 FG 50+, 90 points
Always on the verge of some sort of trouble with the law, Janikowski still has a big leg.
