Buddha once said, "Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment." Surely, even someone as enlightened as Buddha would have enjoyed a good old fashioned Year End Review list, right? After all, how can you move bravely into a New Year without first taking stock of the previous 12 months? And how else would we fill our editorial calendar each December?
Once again, we've asked our writers to pinpoint their highlights and lowlights from the year that was in television, sports, music and movies. Enjoy the memories, and we'll see you back here on the eve of 2010!

DECEMBER 10: We're tired of seeing quality shows get the ax before their time. Fortunately, while 2008 saw the premature swan song for a few more of our favorites, several others survived and thrived. Will Harris and the rest of our TV writers give props to the shows that are still standing with our Year End TV Review.

DECEMBER 17: Brett Favre finally retired in 2008. He also unretired in 2008, held the Packers and the news cycle hostage for a couple months, took his new team to the brink of the playoffs, and then sunk his new team with a late-season collapse. Of course, names like Michael Phelps, Matt Ryan, Kevin Garnett, Plaxico Burress and Tim Lincecum also grabbed a few headlines in our Year End Sports Review.

DECEMBER 24: Some people will look at our Year End Music Review and say we don't "get it." In fact, we'd argue that we get it just fine. At the very least, we contend that if listening to the music of Katy Perry and Timbaland is what it takes to "get it," we prefer to stay out of step with conventional wisdom.

DECEMBER 31: "The Dark Knight" was the headliner in our Year End Movie Review, but the Caped Crusader and his psychotic nemesis were joined by a strong field of quality films. Of course, for every legitimate masterpiece like "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," there's an equally awful dud like "The Love Guru." Thanks a lot, Mike Myers.
