More than a children’s movie, “Where the Wild Things Are” is a movie about childhood itself – inviting audiences of all ages to join in the discovery, challenges and joy of a young boy’s journey to the fantastic island of Wild Things. Inspired by the classic Maurice Sendak book that has captivated generations, “Where the Wild Things Are” reveals that the Wild Things are really the unpredictable emotions inside of Max and inside all of us. Upholding that message, as well as the original story’s spirit, the film offers an unabashedly honest and realistic look at how Max comes to terms with those feelings and takes the first steps toward growing up and finding his place in the world. It expands the scope of Max’s adventures from when he runs away from home to when he becomes king of the Wild Things and enjoys every child’s fantasy of ruling the world. Until he realizes that having everything his way isn’t as good as he expected.
Director Spike Jonze’s visually stunning film blends live action, the Jim Henson Company’s state-of-the-art puppetry and CGI. The Wild Things are given heart and soul by voice performances from a stellar cast led by James Gandolfini, Catherine O’Hara, Forest Whitaker, Lauren Ambrose and Chris Cooper, then brought to life in the physical world by actors inhabiting 8-foot costumes modeled after Sendak’s award-winning drawings. In this way, the Wild Things interact with Max not as animated images, but as real creatures, simultaneously ferocious and endearing. “Where the Wild Things Are” explores sophisticated themes from a child’s point of view and a child’s growing understanding of his feelings and the feelings of others. It’s a film that will spark discussion and stir memories, as well as engage and entertain adults and children.
