Electric, eclectic and occasionally experimental, these New York City groovists have been fine-tuning their unique approach to rump-shaking grooves for the past three years. The band is simply known as ULU, made up of Scott Chasolen (clavinet, organ and piano), Aaron Gardner (tenor sax, flute), David Hoffman (drums), Luca Benedetti (guitar) and Justin Wallace (bass). On their self-titled, home-recorded debut album in 1998, this quartet revitalized the idea of a modern jam-band -- a term so frequently misapplied that it's become an insult -- by actually knowing how to jam, and better yet how to say something with its hypnotizing music. And unlike so many "jam" bands on the circuit today, ULU understands the subtle difference between improvisation and mindless fooling around. And while their instrumental prowess is exemplary, more importantly they know how to hold down a solid, funky backbeat, ranging all over the modern jazz-funk landscape.

Their distinct sound can be identified within the first track, "Canine Brigade," which brings with it a sound similar to the early work of the Dave Matthews Band. The second track, "The Grape," shows ULU's more distinct sound, incorporating a jazzy-dance feel around Hoffman's drums and Chasolen's piano. Other notable songs include "Braintree," a live favorite, and "Personaface," a bass-driven track that is perfect for what I call "chill music."

ULU's self-titled CD, re-released this year under a record label, is an intelligent and fun album. It shows the band's full range and maturity through all 12 tracks, leaving you eagerly awaiting the next album release.
